CIDavid Fincher explained that one of the reasons he cast 35-year-old Rosamund Pike as Amy in Gone Girl (2014), was that she was of unclear age in her appearance, and could pass for an older or younger woman. Rosamund's revelation that she was an only child also proved to be a very appealing aspect for Amy's character in Fincher's opinion.
Gone Girl doesn't have a complicated plot. At its core, it's quite simple: a wife is teaching her cheating husband a lesson. Yes, there are subplots (the affair with Andie, Desi's obsession, etc) but they exist to serve the main story.

Gone Girl weaponizes visual separation between Nick and Amy through mise-en-scene and blocking, David Fincher and cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth creating literal dividing lines that communicate marital fracture before plot reveals full dysfunction. Fincher positions doorframes, walls, furniture, and architectural elements between the couple during domestic scenes, physical objects bisecting frame to show emotional distance growing insurmountable. Nick and Amy rarely share intimate two-shots despite being married, blocking keeps them in separate planes of focus or opposite sides of compositions with negative space carving gulf between them. Flashback scenes use warmer tones and closer framing suggesting false intimacy of Amy’s manipulated memories, present-day cold blues with maximum separation showing reality of their toxic dynamic. Cronenweth’s shallow depth of field isolates characters even when occupying same room, one sharp while other blurs into background suggesting they exist in separate realities despite shared space.
