Ever wonder why the pristine white walls of an Olympic superpipe are marked with those vibrant blue lines? It’s not just for aesthetics—it’s a critical safety feature that allows athletes to “see” the air. In a phenomenon known as “flat light,” where the sky and the snow blend into a single white void, snowboarders and skiers lose their depth perception, making it impossible to tell where the pipe’s lip ends and the 22-foot drop begins. To solve this, course workers use backpack sprayers filled with a biodegradable, water-based blue dye to mark the coping (the edge) and the landing zones. This high-contrast “visual anchor” provides a reference point for timing take-offs and spotting landings mid-spin. Before this tech existed, officials actually used pine needles and boughs to mark the snow, but today’s “blue ink” is the gold standard for high-speed precision.

With Winter X Games going on right now in Aspen this seemed appropriate to bring back some nostalgia of the time 6 year old @cashyrowley poached the @xgames superpipe for a run.
It was 2023 and at this point she has never ridden a halfpipe ever so you can tell she didn’t really understand that she needed to go up the walls. Luckily she had her Aunt Marge @mattmargetts on the follow cam who was able to help coach her on how to ride up each wall back and forth.
Either way she put down a flawless run without a fall or a hand drag and easily snagged a solid score in cuteness!
