A fixture in the Hoppus home since 2011, this piece now heads to auction for the first time in the #SothebysLondon Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction, with proceeds benefiting emerging artists, CHLA, and wildfire relief. The 4 chords that defined an entire generation’s puberty Blink-182 — “Dammit” • Live Recovery, 1997 Mark Hoppus didn’t think he was writing a hit in 1997. He was just trying to finish a song on a bass with only two strings. 1997. San Francisco. Dude Ranch had just dropped and the band was still navigating the friction of the SoCal skate punk scene. “Dammit” was the pivot point. Not about the jokes yet. Just the psychological plateau of growing up and realizing everything is temporary. This performance took place during the Dude Ranch tour cycle. “Dammit” was released as a single on September 23, 1997, and eventually peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Recorded at Big Fish Studios in Encinitas with producer Mark Trombino. At the time of this recording, the band was still under contract with MCA but maintained their association with the San Diego independent scene.
