My daily garden routine isn’t about cleaning - it’s about creating a space where pollinators are at home. As a native gardener who loves #WildFlorida, I’ve learned that what looks like “mess” to some is actually a thriving habitat in nature. 1. Gather fallen leaves → shelter for native bees and other beneficial insects. Fallen leaves also hold water where thirsty animals of all sorts come by to drink or toss to the side to find grubs. Break up twigs → bug hotels for beneficial insects and holds leaves in place. Clear debris → self explanatory. Search for snail shells → garden decor + calcium for the soil Zoom in → witness the magic The result? A garden buzzing with life, supporting local ecosystems, and honestly way easier than raking everything into bags. What’s one “messy” thing you’ve left in your garden? Drop a line if you’re team #LeaveTheLeaves #pollinatorgarden

Transforming your garden into a local wildlife hotspot is about creating a tiny, functional ecosystem. If you build it, they will definitely come! Here is how to make your garden the most popular destination in the neighborhood: 1. Plant Native Plants: Native plants provide specific nectar, pollen, and seeds local insects and birds like to eat. Aim for a mix of early bloomers and late berry producers so the “restaurant” never closes. Supplement with high-quality seeds or suet in feeders, but keep them clean to prevent spreading disease. 2. Add Some Water: Build a small pond, or even bury a bucket with sloped sides so creatures can climb out if they fall in. A shallow birdbath or even a heavy ceramic saucer with some stones in it will give bees a landing pad. Change the water regularly with rainwater to keep it safe and mosquito-free. 3. Embrace Natures Mess: A pile of old wood in a shady corner is a five star hotel for beetles, frogs, and fungi. Leaf litter provides vital insulation for overwintering pollinators. If you can, leave a small patch of grass unmown to provide cover for small mammals and insects. Don’t cut back your perennials in Autumn, leave them for bugs to hide. 4. Provide A Loving Home: Dense shrubs offer better protection and nesting sites, than a wooden fence. Install birdhouses or “bee hotels” for solitary bees. Ensure there’s a small gap under your fence so hedgehogs can pass through safely. 5. Avoid using pesticides or herbicides: They don’t just kill “pests” they remove the food source for the birds and beneficial insects you’re trying to attract! #gardening #wildlife #nature

Small urban gardens and biodiversity mean sharing space—even with the ones we’d rather avoid. Confession: as much as I love the idea of a nature-friendly garden, I struggle with accepting mice, rats, and slugs as part of it. Yesterday, while moving a pile of firewood, a tiny mouse darted out from the last logs. I didn’t scream—but I did feel the urge to drop everything and step back. And then there are the slugs… and yes, we’ve had rats, too. The uncomfortable truth? They all play a role in the ecosystem. Slugs and rats are part of nature’s “clean-up crew” — breaking down organic matter, loosening soil, and returning nutrients through their droppings. Using poison often harms their predators as well—birds of prey, martens, foxes. If we’re serious about a small urban garden that supports biodiversity, we have to learn to coexist. That said, coexistence doesn’t mean carelessness: • No animal products on the compost • Wear gloves (and possibly a mask) when cleaning sheds or rodent-prone areas; wash hands thoroughly • Store animal feed in sealed containers • Keep trash bins tightly closed • Don’t feed hedgehogs or other wildlife at ground level Biodiversity isn’t just about flowers. It’s about responsibility, too. How do you handle the “unwanted” guests in your garden? #smallgarden #urbangarden #biodiversitygarden #wildlifegarden #biodiversity

The determining factor here is wildlife benefit. The plants I will trim and "clean up" thia time if year have already served their purpose and I can remove them without harming anything. But anything that still has edible seed heads or beneficial architecture will stay until spring is fully underway, which it a lot further away than most people realize right now. Im not saying this is a universally accurate list by any means, theyre just examples of where some of my plants fall for me and my practices thia time of year.

This is why bagworms are so easy to miss. Bagworms don’t stand out. They blend into the tree so well that most homeowners walk right past them. This is what they actually look like up close and why damage often shows up before people notice the pest. Mulch your gardens the way nature does 🪾🍃🍂 Key Benefits of Leaf Mulching Natural Fertilizer: As leaves decompose, they release essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium back into the soil. They contain 50–80% of the nutrients a tree extracts from the earth. Weed Suppression: A layer of shredded leaves blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, significantly reducing germination and the need for chemical herbicides. Moisture Retention: Leaf mulch acts as a natural sponge, reducing surface evaporation and keeping soil hydrated during dry spells. Temperature Regulation: It serves as a winter blanket, insulating plant roots from extreme cold and keeping soil cooler during summer heat. Soil Structure Improvement: Decomposing leaves add organic matter that improves aeration in heavy clay soils and enhances water-holding capacity in sandy soils. Wildlife Habitat: Leaf litter is a critical overwintering site for beneficial insects like butterflies, moths, fireflies, and ladybugs, as well as a food source for birds and amphibians. Cost & Environmental Savings: It eliminates the expense of purchasing bagged mulch while reducing landfill waste and municipal collection costs. #naturelovers #gardenhacks #natureprovides #soilhealth #organicgardening
