The exhilarating Rondo movement of the Waldstein Sonata (Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53) published in May 1805 by Beethoven. This is a 2019 rendition full of vigor and determination by Igor Levit (@igorpianist) at the album release party of his complete Beethoven piano sonatas cycle. This movement was filmed for the documentary No Fear, focused on the career and inner struggles of the pianist, right before and also during the pandemic. In 1855, Wilhelm von Lenz helped in configuring the understanding of Beethoven’s music in a book titled « Beethoven and his three styles » by distinguishing three periods. The middle period (1802-1812) has often been called heroic because of the Third Symphony’s nickname and also because of subsequent works in the same bravura vein, like this Waldstein sonata which Lenz described as « a heroic symphony for piano ». Dedicated to his patron, the Count of Waldstein, the piece is solar (the French have called it L’Aurore, meaning The Dawn) and fiery, especially in this passage where the Sturm und Drang spirit is in full effect, with a potent orchestral texture made possible by the new Érard piano Beethoven got in 1803 all the way from Paris. Indeed, from 5 octaves, Beethoven could now compose for 5 and a half octaves and make use of new features like the four pedals: the lute stop, the damper (sustain pedal), the dampening (sourdine) and the action-shifting (una corda). Beethoven indicates pedal markings and they are crucial to the figurations of the theme, which is suspected be a folk song from Rhineland, the region of origin of Beethoven.
