Imbas 24 x 24 earth, pigment and acrylic on canvas now available for purchase at the mountain nest gallery in Black Mountain, and their online gallery. @mtnnestgallery you’ll find a link to their online gallery in my profile. 🩵🦋🩵 These last few weeks I’ve had a remarkable amount of people coming into the studio and becoming tearful in front of my paintings. it’s such a huge compliment to any artist if someone’s heart is moved by a piece, that something you’ve made has caused someone to feel, I’ve welcomed the tears and the stories. In the turbulent tone of life here these paintings offer a very different mirror. My motivation seems now to be to make a refuge in these works, for the imagination to escape, to rest replenish heal mourn and reimagine. Its becoming almost vocational in the making and more important to let them emerge. People consistently call them portal paintings now, and I have adopted that name. I’m making a section on my website for that in itself. A portal place in my mind is a place like a dolmen tomb in Ireland or a holy well or really the feeling I have when I stay in the forest long enough to feel the forest. I am reminded of a beautiful stone with 2000 year old Petroglyphs up near Silva about 45 minutes out of Asheville and the feeling I got when I touched that stone. And then a slideshow erupts in my mind of Paintings and markings all the way back through history that when I look into them, I am seeing myself as part of the whole system of life. And it is beautiful and sad and incredibly grounding. To make some things pretty is a hard thing to hold sometimes in this world, to believe in the power of flowers and forest and dawning light. That the symbol of a circle is not jaded but essential and holding up mirrors of cycles and thresholds and natures generosity is not naive but so core to the loss and grief of our culture.
