India is set to become the fourth nation (after Russia/USSR, the United States, and China) to develop a domestic capability to launch humans into space. In Hindi, they're called "gaganauts" rather than astronauts.
India’s Gaganyaan mission represents the country’s ambitious foray into human spaceflight. Developed by ISRO, the spacecraft aims to carry three astronauts into low Earth orbit for a planned duration of three days. Scheduled for launch aboard the GSLV Mk III rocket, Gaganyaan includes critical safety measures such as an emergency escape system and advanced environmental controls. Key tests, including crew module recovery and abort systems, have been conducted, with crew training underway in India and Russia. This mission underscores India’s growing space capabilities and its focus on long-term space exploration goals. This launch is a test flight of the Gaganyaan capsule.
