BINothing more humbling than explaining science… to other scientists (my first OFFICIAL talk in two years!)
📚 Once a week, all the MD-PhD students pack into one room—and one of us presents at Journal Club. The assignment? Pick a paper in our PhD field that pushes us to explain techniques we are NOT familiar with and practice breaking it down. Few things test you more than leading a conversation while still learning yourself.
🧠 It was my turn this week :) I chose a computational neuroscience study exploring how specific patterns of brain waves between two regions tied to emotion may help guide the targets of future deep brain neuromodulation / deep brain stimulation therapies. The study relied -heavily- on computational analyses I had only read about in passing—it was even more dense than it sounds.
🫶 HUGE thanks to Simone @simonewoodruff for making time to help me prep all 55 slides—and to my preceptor for advising.
💬 This class exists so we can practice critical scientific conversations in a safe community where everyone is learning. Grateful to everyone who showed up, asked thoughtful questions, and stayed patient while I worked through this talk.

OVSurprisingly a PhD isn’t just sitting at a desk, reading papers, and being “aesthetically smart.”
Here are skills I didn’t expect to need — but use constantly:
1. Public speaking & confidence
You present all the time.
Lab meetings. Progress reviews. Conferences.
You need to explain your work:
• clearly
• concisely
• confidently
People form their impression of your research through how you present it.
If you can communicate well, your work is understood better — and you’re perceived as a more competent researcher.
2. Translating your work (not sounding smart for the sake of it)
A huge misconception is that sounding complicated = being smart.
It’s actually the opposite.
If people can’t understand your work, they’ll assume you don’t understand it.
Being able to explain complex ideas simply — to people from different backgrounds — shows true mastery.
If you really know your work, you can explain it to any intelligent person.
3. Coding
I’m doing a PhD in psychology.
We weren’t taught much coding in undergrad.
Yet most of my PhD involves:
• coding experiments
• coding statistical analyses
• working with data constantly
I code more than I read or write some weeks.
4. Skimming papers efficiently
You cannot read every paper deeply.
You need to:
• skim fast
• identify what’s relevant
• decide what’s worth deep reading
Trying to read everything in depth is not productive.
A PhD is about covering a lot of ground strategically before going into depth.
5. Understanding what “expert” actually means
Doing a PhD doesn’t make you an expert in all of psychology.
You become an expert in something extremely specific.
Think:
not the forest → not the tree → not even the leaf
but a cell on one leaf.
And that’s normal.
A PhD isn’t about knowing everything.
It’s about knowing one very small thing extremely well — and being able to explain why it matters.

THI started my science career at Imperial College London when I was 18 and just moved to the UK on my own to pursue my dreams. Undergraduates were tough and I felt like I was not good enough to be there about 99% of the time. And the truth is, I most likely wasn’t. There were so many smart people there, so much more knowledgeable than I was. But I was a hard worker, and I pushed through. At the end of my bachelors I was thinking of going back home or switching to the business courses because science was not my thing. Then, at the end of my third year during a presentation on my work as an intern I met the person who will then become my Masters and PhD supervisor. Unlike all the other teachers I have had before, he actually thought I had potential and said I should apply for masters in his group. I did. There, I met a PhD student who became my co-supervisor. She was incredibly patient, kind and clever. She talked about labs in a way that no one else during my undergraduate course had done before. Thanks to these people I started falling back in love with science again and thought that maybe - just maybe - I had a shot at having a career in that field. So I worked my hardest and ended up applying for a PhD and I guess the rest is history. People from the outside often assume that since I am doing research, I have always been good at what I do. That is definitely not the case. I am most definitely not perfect now. But every skill can be learned if you put the right amount of effort, passion, and you have the right support. I was lucky. After years of being told I was not good enough and just when I was about to quit my passion, the universe sent me two incredible mentors. If you are reading this and you are hoping to pursue a PhD or a career in research, I will leave you with this piece of advice: make sure you surround yourself with the right people. Great supervisors truly do make a difference in the quality of research you will produce and the type of experience you will have.
