#stitch with @ashralouisa DuBois et al. (2016) reviewed both structural and functional neuroimaging studies showing reduced activation in the insula during interoceptive tasks in autistic individuals. They also highlight altered connectivity between the insula and anterior cingulate cortex, which together help monitor and respond to internal states. These differences help explain why many autistic people struggle not just with emotional awareness (alexithymia), but also with understanding what’s happening in their own bodies Source: DuBois, D., Ameis, S. Here’s the science👇🏼 Self sabotage isn’t a personal failure. It’s the brain doing what it was trained to do: protect you from pain, even if that protection keeps you stuck. The truth is, your nervous system doesn’t automatically know the difference between safety and sabotage… it only knows habit. Modern psychology tells us that when the amygdala is overactive, we relive old fear and trauma as if they’re happening now. The prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for planning, decision making, and self regulation—is what helps us step out of that loop. And the insula, which develops through mindfulness, gives us interoception: the ability to sense what’s happening inside so we can respond rather than react. On the yoga mat, I wasn’t just “stretching.” I was training my brain. Every breath + every asana became a micro practice in self regulation. Every moment I stayed present inside discomfort became an act of self love. And slowly, I began to speak to myself differently, to meet myself with compassion: Hey Marissa, I know sometimes the past gets loud. Thank you for staying.
Ok, I didn’t handle that perfectly, but I still love you.
And, it’s alright to be upset. We have space for that.
Let’s slow down and come back to connection.
This dialogue didn’t come naturally. It had to be practiced the same way we practice balancing in tree pose or steadying the breath in pranayama. Through repetition, I taught my brain that it is safe to stay, to soften, to return. Yoga philosophy has always pointed us here: to compassion, presence, and union. Psychology now shows us why it works. When we combine the two, we build the capacity for real transformation: ✨ Self regulation is not just about calming down. It’s about creating space between stimulus and response so we can choose wisely.
✨ Self love is not a fleeting feeling… it’s the daily discipline of how we speak to ourselves in the moments that matter most.
✨ Together, self regulation and self love rewire the patterns of self sabotage into patterns of self support. Are you also training your mind through yoga? 🧠 #selfregulation #selflove #yogateacher #psychology #yogapractice #rewireyourbrain

Why I "sit on the job"🤣....table or mat based: Here are 5 reasons why these types of temporary "blood stops" (and subsequent releases) can be essential in bringing the body back to its natural state: 1. The Rebound Effect: a targetted area, then having a sudden release - vessels in that area dilate, leading to a surge of fresh, oxygenated blood, nutrients, and lymphatic fluid. This flushing action effectively reinvigorating the local circulation and ensures that tissues receive vital supplies. Improved localized circulation helps reset the natural flow of the body 2. Muscle & Fascia Engagement "pumping": Compression against bone or other body structures creates a localized pumping action. It milks out metabolic waste & facilitates the influx of fresh blood upon release, mimicking the venous return function of muscles as a secondary circulatory pump. Addressing fascial stiffness & dehydration, improving fluid exchange, & alleviating restrictions to blood flow. Restoring tissue elasticity & functionality. 3. Parasympathetic Activated: initial mild stress response from restriction, followed by breathwork and the release of blood flow can shift the autonomic nervous system. In this state, the body's natural healing and restorative processes are enhanced. This shift away from a "fight or flight" state allows the body to return to a more balanced and natural, calm equilibrium. 4. Targeted Healing: Techniques to a specific area can trigger a localized inflammatory response followed by healing nutrients, which can accelerate recovery. 5. Body awareness: known as interoception, this deepens the mind-body connection. Focused attention to these areas, individuals are more attuned to subtle internal signals of tension, stagnation, or blockages. Crucial for understanding the body's natural state, identifying where it deviates, & then consciously working towards realigning it. Giving "attention" to these areas is a powerful component of their natural healing process. #bodywork #connected #slowchik #bslow #northernmichigan #greatlakes #boynecity #healingarts #selfcare #bloodstop #bfr #healing #recovery #sit #sitting #onthejob #matwork #stretchamethod #muscle #fascia

Obstacle Courses: A Fun & Functional Therapy Tool!🌟🛠 Obstacle courses aren’t just exciting—they’re a powerful way to support child development! These dynamic activities help kids strengthen essential skills while having fun. Here’s how: Core Strength & Stability 🤸 Crawling, climbing, and balancing engage the core, improving posture and control for everyday movements. Balance & Coordination🏄‍♂️ Navigating obstacles challenges kids to shift weight, stabilize their bodies, and move smoothly through space. Vestibular Input🌀 Jumping, spinning, and swinging activate the inner ear, improving balance, spatial awareness, and overall movement control. Proprioception (Body Awareness)🏋 Pushing, pulling, and climbing provide deep pressure input, helping kids understand where their bodies are in space. Interoception (Internal Body Awareness)🧘 Physical activity helps kids recognize internal cues like hunger, thirst, and fatigue, supporting self-regulation. Executive Functioning🧠 Planning, sequencing, and adapting to obstacles challenge problem-solving, working memory, and impulse control. Social Skills⭐ Turn-taking, teamwork, and communication are built naturally as kids navigate obstacles together! What if I told YOU there’s a part of YOUR brain whose job is to detect betrayal… and trauma literally shrinks it? 😳 🧠 It’s called the INSULA! 🧠 This is YOUR emotional radar and internal GPS. It’s constantly mapping what you feel, who feels safe, and when someone’s lying, gaslighting, or violating trust. But long-term emotional abuse causes insular atrophy, a real, measurable loss in the very tissue that reads your emotional truth. 💔 Harvard Medical School (Etkin et al., 2022) found trauma survivors have significantly reduced insular volume and disrupted interoceptive accuracy. 💔 Yale University (Tsoory et al., 2019) confirmed that betrayal trauma rewires the insula-amygdala circuit, blunting emotional awareness and body sensation. 💔 McGill Neuroscience (Craig, 2020) showed that insular shrinkage explains alexithymia, the inability to identify or describe your emotions, common in C-PTSD. So no, you’re not “too sensitive” or “emotionally numb.” You’re navigating the world with a damaged compass. ✨ Micro Practice - Finding Your GPS Signal 1️⃣ Place your hand on your heart. 2️⃣ Ask: “Where do I feel this in my body?” 3️⃣ Focus there. Inhale 4… Exhale 8. 4️⃣ Now let’s repeat - “I’m not broken. I’m learning to read my own map again.” Each time you do THIS practice… YOU ARE reactivating and repairing YOUR insula’s ability to read YOUR inner world!!! 🫶 Go heal sunshine! ☀️ xo Brittney 💋🧠🧘‍♀️🪬🧬 📚 My Verified Neuro References - Etkin A. et al., 2022. The connective tissue - Fascia’s role in nerve transmission and sensory perception is a fascinating area of research in the field of fascia studies. While fascia was traditionally viewed primarily as a structural component of the body, recent research has revealed that it contains a network of nerves known as mechanoreceptors and nociceptors, which can transmit sensory information. This has significant implications for our understanding of how the body perceives and responds to touch, pressure, and movement. One important study in this regard is the work of Dr. Robert Schleip and his colleagues, who have contributed significantly to our understanding of fascia and its sensory function. Dr. Schleip’s research has highlighted the presence of mechanoreceptors in fascial tissues and their role in proprioception and interoception—the body’s ability to sense its own position and internal state. In their paper titled “Fascia as a sensory organ,” published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies in 2012, Schleip et al. discuss the presence of various sensory receptors in fascia, including Ruffini corpuscles, Pacinian corpuscles, and free nerve endings. These receptors are involved in detecting changes in tension, pressure, and vibration within fascial tissues. #fascia #movement #performancecoach #performancecoaching #kneepain #groinpain

We often talk about trauma as if it’s only damage. Scroll through Instagram and you’ll hear the same refrain again and again: trauma, trauma, trauma… as if it’s only a life sentence of pain. But our nervous system tells a different story. From evolution, we inherited three layers of nervous system intelligence: the reptilian system that freezes and conserves, the mammalian system that bonds and protects, and the uniquely human capacity to observe, reflect, and choose. When trauma shakes us, it doesn’t just wound us. It disrupts the old inherited patterns — the reflexes of fight, flight, or freeze that we carried from ancient survival. In neurobiology, this disruption is often terrifying because the nervous system loses its familiar rhythm. Yet within that rupture lies an opening. Neuroplasticity shows us that the brain and body can rewire. Trauma, paradoxically, activates the very systems that allow for growth and transformation. The amygdala may fire alarms, the vagus nerve may collapse us into stillness — but the prefrontal cortex, the insula, the networks of self-awareness give us a chance to witness and reshape what we carry. This is not about denying the pain. Trauma hurts. It overwhelms. But it is also an opportunity — a doorway into discovering the hidden strength of the nervous system as it truly is, not only as it was inherited. Healing then becomes more than recovery. It becomes evolution. A journey where what was once unbearable becomes the soil for new consciousness. If you are walking with trauma, know this: your nervous system is not broken. It is alive, ancient, and waiting to show you what more it can do. When you think about your own nervous system — do you see it as fragile, or do you see it as holding untapped potential?
