Watch what comes out of it! 😱 #Animals #Nature Cockle clams are chunky little “digging machines” that live just under the sand in the ocean’s intertidal zone. Unlike smoother clams, many cockles have bold ribbed shells that help them stay strong against waves and shifting sand. They’re filter feeders, which means they siphon seawater, trap tiny plankton and organic bits for food, then release the cleaned water back out, basically acting like natural water filters. When the tide drops, they burrow down to stay moist and protected, and you can sometimes spot their presence by small dimples or tiny holes in the sand where they’ve been breathing. Fun fact: some cockles can even “jump” by flexing their muscular foot, flipping themselves to a better spot if they get exposed! #MarineLife

W A L K I N G 🐙 This was one of my most extraordinary marine encounters! I was exploring the intertidal zone on a cloudy day in New South Wales & out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a small dog walking across the tide pools. I looked again and saw it was a huge Gloomy Octopus (Octopus tetricus) walking on "land" between the tidal pools. The Octopus continued to forage for around 30 minutes before making its long way back towards the waterline! I'll never forget this octopus ❤️ #octopus#cephalopod#ocean#australia#nature#wild#explore

This probably isn’t what you have in mind when you think of “ocean ASMR.” All jokes — and weird sounds — aside, some octopuses are built for life in the intertidal zone, where water levels constantly rise and fall. When the tide is low, they squeeze into damp sand, wedge into rock crevices, and wait for the water to return. As long as they stay moist, they can survive brief exposure to air by absorbing oxygen through their skin. These adaptations help them navigate shifting tides, lurking predators, and the occasional awkward moment of being semi-exposed to the world.
