Keen to start stomping some laybacks? First things first—stay above your board! One of the most common mistakes when learning laybacks is pushing the board away from you with both feet. Instead, try these cues - * Lean back and touch the water behind you with your back hand
 * Kick hard with your back foot to throw the tail, but… Bend your front knee and keep the board tucked under your body
 When starting out, it’s really important not to push too hard. Ease into it and learn the body position. At first, there might not be much actual “laying back” going on, but with experience, you’ll get the timing down —pushing your board further out from under you, then using your front foot to bring it back just in time before the fins re-engage. Once they do, that tail should snap back under you—and boom you’ll be laying back harder than Bob Marley after 12 Jeffrey’s. Side note: There are laybacks with more release, and then there are more carve-like laybacks where you keep your rail engaged. Both are sick, and you might find one easier than the other. Give it a go and let me know how you go!

Why I think laybacks are the best turn to go to on bigger waves when you’re going fast at a section! When you going really fast at a section you want to be able to lay your board on rail and get it to one bite in and then two be able to hold its rail through the turn. This is where a layback is the perfect turn to go to! By putting your arms behind you and your weight on your heels much more then a regular frontside carve or snap. You are turning the board over on its rail much more allowing you to bite into the wave face and in turn being able to put much more force through your board when your in that layback position. Allowing you to feel more in control of the turn when travelling at high speed. What’s your go to turn when the waves are solid? PJT 06.
