Layla is one of Eric Clapton’s most iconic songs, recorded in 1970 with his band Derek and the Dominos and released on their album Layla and Other Assorted Love Song's. Written by Eric Clapton and drummer Jim Gordon, the song was inspired by Clapton’s unrequited love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of George Harrison at the time. Musically, Layla is famous for its passionate guitar riff and emotional intensity, followed by a contrasting piano coda that gives the track a dramatic two part structure. Until upto the year 1996, Eric Clapton would probably have had already spent close to 25 years playing Layla. The original 1970 version with Derek and the Dominos was loud, desperate and full of tension, driven by Duane Allman’s slide guitar and one of the most famous riffs in rock history. Then in 1992, Clapton reinvented it completely for MTV Unplugged, slowing it down and turning it into an acoustic blues shuffle. But this 1996 duet with Dr. John at Roseland Ballroom is something else entirely. Instead of trying to recreate the original version, Clapton leans into a much looser New Orleans feel. His Gibson ES-335 tone is warm and clean, the tempo is relaxed, and Dr. John’s piano gives the song this smoky, late-night atmosphere that makes it sound like it belongs in a jazz club rather than a stadium. That is what makes this performance so interesting. Clapton had reached a point in his career where he no longer needed to prove he could play the song the “right” way. He could completely reshape it depending on the room, the band and the mood. In this version, he strips away all the urgency and turns “Layla” into something reflective, almost like the older version of the same heartbreak. The Roseland Ballroom performance happened during a period when Clapton was moving deeper into blues, jazz and roots music. Albums like From the Cradle and his collaborations with artists like Dr. John showed that he was becoming less interested in being a guitar hero and more interested in being a musician who could fit into any style. #ericclapton #derekandthedominos #layla #90s #guitar

Eric Clapton is one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived—raw, soulful, and timeless ❤️ Born March 30, 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, England, Eric Clapton grew up in a fractured family (raised by grandparents after his mother left) and found escape in the blues records of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and B.B. King. He taught himself guitar as a teen, joined The Yardbirds at 19 (replacing Eric Burdon), then Cream (1966–1968), turning blues-rock into psychedelic fire with hits like “Sunshine of Your Love” and “White Room.” After Cream disbanded, he formed Blind Faith, then Derek and the Dominos—where he wrote and recorded the masterpiece “Layla” about his unrequited love for Pattie Boyd (George Harrison’s wife). His solo career is legendary: 461 Ocean Boulevard (1974) gave us “I Shot the Sheriff,” Slowhand (1977) delivered “Cocaine” and “Wonderful Tonight,” August (1986) brought “It’s in the Way That You Use It,” and Unplugged (1992) won six Grammys with acoustic versions of “Tears in Heaven” (written after the tragic death of his 4-year-old son Conor) and “Layla.” He’s won 18 Grammys, sold over 100 million records, and is the only musician inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times (Yardbirds, Cream, solo). Clapton’s playing style—slow, expressive bends, sustain that feels like crying, and tone that sings—has influenced everyone from Jimmy Page to John Mayer. In 2026, he’s still active—releasing music, touring selectively, and remaining a living link to the golden age of blues and rock.
