VEGlutinous Rice Balls (Tang Yuan)
Making this dessert became a family affair, with the help of my sister and niece…and of course, taste tester, Papa Man.
We eat glutinous rice balls, also known as tang yuan, because it represents unity (indicated by its round shape). We eat this dessert as a family, to ensure togetherness and a year of good health.
1 cup of glutinous rice flour
1/2 cup warm water
1/4 cup black sesame paste OR peanut mixture (same as the one from the fried sesame balls)
1 cup water
1/4 cup golden monkfruit sweetener
2-3 tbsp maple syrup
2 thumbs of ginger, smashed
1. Slowly add warm water to the rice flour,
not pouring it all at once. As you mix using your hands, add more water if it’s still dry.
2. Once all the water has been poured, knead the dough until it comes together. It shouldn’t be wet nor too dry.
3. Pinch off a tbsp worth of dough, roll into a ball, make a dip in the center, and add a 1/4 tsp of black sesame paste or peanut filling in the middle. Bring the edges of the circle together, so that it fully encloses the filling and roll it back into a ball.
4. Drop tang yuen into a pot of boiling water and mix around. Once it floats to the surface, its ready (this only takes 2 minutes or so).
5. In a separate pot, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Add golden monkfruit sweetener, maple syrup, and ginger to the pot. Let it cook until the sweetener granules melt and the ginger is fully infused into the liquid (about 3-4 minutes).
6. Add sweet soup to the bowl of tang yuen and enjoy!

Same PSA as before - I haven’t figured out a low carb substitute of rice flour…so not keto nor paleo, but damn delicious. It’s accompanied by that ginger sweet soup and man, oh man, is it good.
1 cup of glutinous rice flour
