WAWant realistic shadows? Don’t use black, use color theory! 🎨

Here’s a pro-level tip to make your paintings pop: use complementary colors for your shadows!
Instead of starting this red apple with red, I began with its complement, green, in the areas where the shadows would be. When you glaze the main color (red) over its complement (green), the colors partially neutralize each other, creating a shadow that is deep, rich, and looks completely natural.
This technique, called complementary underpainting, is a game-changer for adding depth and realism to your work!

🌱 The “oil” in oil paint comes from plants, often sustainably harvested from crops like flax and safflower ☀️
💚 With so many odor-free, eco-friendly alternatives available, you don’t need traditional solvents to paint with oils
🌰 Linseed oil has an aroma we’d describe as earthy or nutty. Love it or hate it, unless you have medical concerns relating to oils, it isn’t harmful.
🤓 Most oil colors are labeled safe for all ages 🎨 When in doubt, just look for the AP seal from the ACMI.
🧯Oil colors in the tube (or on your canvas) are not a combustion risk! Just practice good studio hygiene and properly dispose of any oil-soaked rags lying around.
💯 Oil painting is EASY and FUN 🥰 The basics are accessible, and the vibrant colors, smooth blending, and long drying times make the experience unlike any other 🚀
