for those not in those tiers, if you join any time you’ll get access to this digital download and over two years worth of previous downloads! Video transcript: Have you heard of letterlocking? This lost art is a historical method to ensure privacy in one’s letters, and we’re going to make one today. Start off with a blank sheet of letter paper, or use a template that I illustrated myself, available on my Patreon. Fold the sides inward towards the centre, making them as even as possible. I use a ruler to flatten the folded edges. Next, fold it in half. We are going to be dividing it into quarters. Bring the bottom edge towards the centre fold, creating the first two quarters. Then bring the top towards the centre fold.  This is the trickiest part: fold the top quarter towards the centre line, creating a point at the top. Mine is uneven, but it doesn’t matter too much. Lastly, fold the bottom three quarters up to the top, and fold the top quarter down, creating the envelope shape. And now you have your very own letter fold. The Victorian puzzle purse is an elaborately folded letter which, as it opens, reveals meaningful motifs surrounded by love messages and poems. Historically made with ink and watercolor on thick paper, “puzzle purses” draw their origin from Japanese folded letters (itogami) and the early modern practice of “letterlocking,” which protects the security of a secret message using elaborate folds rather than a seal. Because they are so delicate— and tend to fall apart from repeated folding— only a few of these puzzle purses survive. Our teacher, Elliot Rockart (@myweeklyarn), has created an embroidered version that not only can be folded and unfolded with ease, but also written and rewritten with the use of a heat eraseable pen.
