This might be the weirdest way I’ve ever prepped a plate … I spent yesterday drawing onto six aluminum foil plates. 🙌 We weren’t sure if our usual image transfer methods would cause issues during printing, so we decided to upload my sketch to the Meta Quest (we usually use transfer paper or conté). It felt a bit overkill for this project, and I looked ridiculous, but it really made drawing the same image six times easier and faster. These plates will be used to test out different types of inks. We’re curious which of our inks can be used for kitchen litho. We’re testing out oil-based inks, water-based and water-soluble inks. We wanted to make sure that the linework on the plates was more or less the same across all six plates. This way we can make sure the focus is on ink application and transfer. We’re excited to see what the resulting prints will look like. . . . . . . . . #kitchenlitho #litho #printmaking #print #drawing

⭐ WHY TAKE DRAWING INTO PRINT? ⭐ Because... 1. By taking an impression from one surface to another you gain an inky quality like nothing else 2. You can create a multiple which means you can sell your work at more affordable prices - though don't under price because each one is printed by hand and is still an 'original print!' 3. By taking a print from another surface you relinquish a bit of control which allows for happy accidents and interesting marks 4. You can vary the way you ink your plate/block so each print is different but comes from the same drawing! 5. You can explore layering, reworking, adding & removing 6. You can combine with other mediums such as sculpture, ceramics, textiles, painting 7. You can create a large scale repeat design using just a small sketch 8. Even if you don't think you can draw - printmaking can transform the simplest design 9. Through each printmaking process you learn something new, it challenges you to think differently about your approach 10. Why not?! What do you think?! In the Waters of the River Sky - kitchen litho full process [EN/FR] As I said back in May when I made my first attempt at kitchen litho, I needed to forget a bit about the pain of all the failures I had before looking at the footage to edit a full process video 🤣 The parts I filmed for the successive steps actually come from at least 4 different attempts, hence the glimpses you can catch of designs that never made it, because some part of the process failed (usually the wiping with oil after the cola etch). In total I tried 6 different designs, only the last of which became “In the Waters of the River Sky” 🪷 To more learning, more experimenting, and always, more making art 🥰 . . [FR] Comme dit en mai lors de ma première tentative de kitchen, j’avais besoin d’oublier un peu la douleur de tous les ratés avant de reregarder mes vidéos pour monter une vidéo complète du processus. 🤣 Les parties que j’ai filmées pour les étapes successives viennent en réalité d’au moins quatre tentatives différentes, d’où les aperçus de motifs qui n’ont jamais abouti à cause de divers accidents (généralement l’essuyage à l’huile après la morsure au coca).
