I’m not a normal person that can let these comments go unchecked. Despite what you may have heard on social media, you should be taking folic acid. And this is not just according to me, a board certified OB/Gyn. It’s the recommendation by ACOG, SMFM, the CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics and others. Methylfolate and folic acid are NOT the same thing. They are both forms of folate, but folic acid is the only form that has been studied and shown to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, which are abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord. It’s possible that methylfolate can reduce the risk as well, but this has not been proven in research studies so we just don’t know if it works as well as folic acid. And despite what you may have heard on social media, people with MTHFR gene variants do not need a methylfolate or any special type of folate. MTHFR variants are NOT clinically significant and studies have shown that gene variants alone do not significantly change the way your body processes folate. So people with MTHFR variants should still follow the same recommendations for folic acid supplementation in pregnancy as everyone else: consume at least 400 mcg per day of FOLIC ACID. And while it’s ideal to get folate from dietary sources as much as possible, the reality is that most people are not getting adequate amounts in their diet, which is why supplementation is important. So don’t buy into the hype. If you’re trying to conceive or in early pregnancy, take a prenatal vitamin daily and make sure you’re getting at least 400 mcg of folic acid with it. . . . . . . . . . #fertilitydoctor #folicacid #folate #mthfr #prenatalvitamins #prenatal #fertilityjourney #ttcjourney #fertilitytips

When it comes to the health of our babies even the minutest decisions we need to make can feel daunting and it usually starts with which prenatal vitamin should I be taking? Internet is a great resource but should not dictate your medical decisions. One day you watch a reel saying if you are not taking prenatal vitamin with methylated folate in it then your body isn’t even getting folate it needs. Next month you’ll see another reel explaining only prenatal vitamins with folic acid have been proven to prevent spina bifida and other neural tube defects. While it could be good to be generally aware of what’s all available out there, you should always talk things out with your personal doctor. Get testing done to see if you have conditions that need a deviation in treatment and medication before you jump to conclusions So call boutique prenatal companies are capitalising on people who might be easily convinced. You’ll end up spending a lot more money than you probably need to and worry when it’s not needed Talk to your doctor. They are your best and should be primary source of scientific information #prenatalvitamin #folate #folicacid #methylfolate #ttc

Unpopular opinion: If you’re TTC and your prenatal says folic acid… you may want to rethink it. Folic acid is synthetic. It has to be converted before your body can use it — and not everyone does that efficiently. When we’re talking about egg quality and early neural tube development, we want bioavailable support from day one. Look for L-5-MTHF or methylfolate instead. Better input → better environment → better outcomes. Save this and check your label tonight.

One small tablet does one of the biggest jobs in early pregnancy. Folic acid plays a crucial role in forming your baby’s brain and spine, often before you even realize you’re pregnant. This development happens in the very first weeks, which is why timing matters so much. Missing folic acid in the first month cannot be fully corrected later. In this video, we explain why doctors stress early supplementation, how folic acid supports neural tube development, and why starting it on time is one of the simplest yet most powerful steps for a healthy pregnancy. #FolicAcid #EarlyPregnancyCare #HealthyBaby

prenatal folate vs folic acid — if you’re choosing a prenatal and feeling overwhelmed by conflicting information, you’re not alone. I’ve seen a lot of confusion about this prenatal “missing folic acid,” so I just want to gently explain what’s actually happening. it’s not missing folate — it’s using methylated folate (5-MTHF), the bioactive form your body can use directly. folic acid has to be converted first, and not everyone converts it efficiently. form matters, especially in pregnancy nutrition. as a nurse and a mom of three, I’ve learned that prenatal supplements aren’t one-size-fits-all. thoughtful formulation is about supporting healthy folate status — not cutting corners. you deserve to understand what you’re putting in your body 🤍 if you want the link to the prenatal I use, comment “LINK” and I’ll send it to you. #NeededPartner http://thisisneeded.com/AnnieDuggan these statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. this product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. • • • #prenatalvitamins #prenatalnutrition #pregnancynutrition #methylfolate

Planning to conceive? Must watch this. Yes, doctors usually prescribe folic acid when you’re trying for pregnancy. It helps prevent neural tube defects and supports your baby’s early development. But here’s something many women don’t know: In some cases, the body doesn’t convert folic acid efficiently into its active form. This can happen due to variations in the MTHFR gene, which affects how folate is metabolised. In such cases, methyl folate (the active form) may be recommended, as it does not require conversion and is readily used by the body. Important: Don’t self-medicate. Always get your levels checked and consult your doctor before switching supplements. Share this reel with someone who’s planning to conceive! #pregnancynutrition #folicacid #pregnancyhealth

Do you always supplement with folic acid while pregnant? Appropriate maternal intake of folic acid is essential to the fetus during pregnancy. There is significant evidence that fetal neuronal tube defects (NTD) can be prevented if folic acid therapy is initiated before pregnancy and continues during pregnancy. Based on evidence from clinical trials, the United States Public Health Services (USPHS), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend a folic acid intake of 0.4mg/day from food and/or supplements during childbearing years, and 0.6mg/day throughout pregnancy. Additionally, data indicate that women with previous neuronal tube defect affected pregnancies should increase their folic acid intake to 4mg/day during the greatest risk (1 month before conception and 3 months after conception). An optimum dosage has not been established; the lowest effective dose for preventing neuronal tube defects is unknown. Adding foods high in folic acid foods can further help prevent NTD. Foods include legumes (beans, peas, lentils), asparagus, eggs, leafy greens, beets, citrus fruits, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, nuts and seeds. Most prenatal vitamins contain folic acid, sometimes in the form of folate or L-methylfolate. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new medication.#mompharmacist #pharmacistmom #pediatricpharmacy #babyfever #momhealthtips

Why you should not miss your folic acid before and during pregnancy: Folic acid can help: before and during pregnancy. It supports rapid cell division, brain/spinal cord development, red blood cell formation, and reduces risks of preterm birth and congenital heart defects. It is advised to take a supplement for at least 3 months before pregnancy and throughout the first trimester (up to 12 weeks), though continuing throughout the entire pregnancy is common. Always feel free to consult your doctor. Check the next post ❤️ #reels #instagood #reelsinstagram #awareness #women

And you found my page 💁🏻‍♀️ Comment FOLATE to get the link to the Wild + Well Pregnancy Foundations - where I dive into my complete protocol to a healthy pregnancy! Here’s the thing — folic acid and folate are not interchangeable…. Folic acid is the synthetic form of vitamin B9. It has to be converted in the body before it becomes usable. Folate (like 5-MTHF) is the bioactive form your body can actually use for methylation, DNA synthesis, placental development, and early neural tube formation. And this matters most in the first 4–6 weeks of pregnancy — often before your first OB appointment. Up to 40% of women have genetic variations that may reduce how efficiently they convert folic acid. So when we say “just take folic acid,” we’re skipping a really important nuance in preconception and early pregnancy nutrition. This is why inside Wild + Well: The Pregnancy Journey we don’t just say “take a prenatal.” We break down: • How to choose a truly supportive prenatal • Folate vs folic acid (and when it matters) • Iron, choline, iodine, DHA, B12 + more • Labs to consider early — not just at 28 weeks • Trimester-specific nutrient demands If you’re newly pregnant, trying to conceive, or planning ahead — you deserve more than a one-line supplement recommendation. ✨ The course is currently on sale — and you can grab each trimester individually or save with the full bundle. Lifetime access included. Comment FOLATE and I’ll send you the link to get the support every mama deserves ✨ #prenatalnutrition #folatevsfolicacid #pregnancysupport #firsttrimester

Please stop using Folic acid! Its synthetic form of B9 and poorly absorbed by the body. In fact, at the doses alot of people are getting it at, its causing problems. Use a natural form of folate, if you are going to take it, in the form of methylfolate or folinic acid. Or better yet, get some testing done to see if you actually need it or not. Yes research was done on 200mcg of folic acid being of benefit, not 800mcg or even 5mg being prescribed in some supplements, on top if whats fortified in our food! Crazy! #fertilitynaturopath #womenshealth #ttc
