It’s decades of radio engineering, redundant transmitters, and category ratings that let airlines keep flying when visibility drops to meters. A VOR approach? Old-school, tougher. Horizontal guidance only. Step-down fixes, minimum descent altitudes, visual descent points — you’re managing the profile by math, timing, and trust. In thick fog a VOR approach turns the cockpit into a checklist: “Minimums… not visual… missed approach.” No gentle glide path, no autoland safety net. So when the world goes grey, ILS is the calm surgeon and VOR is the old mapmaker — both noble, both necessary. Watch the needles dance, listen for the callouts, and feel why precision matters. ✈️✨

Manual flight, neatly stabilized on the localizer and glide-slope. We’re nearly empty with a landing weight of just over 200,000 kg and as light as a feather, for 747-standards that is. Still 2,5 times the maximum takeoff weight of a Boeing 737-800. The lead-in lights, also known as the ‘running rabbit’ light flashing in the approach light structure, guiding us towards the nearly 4 km runway ahead. Soon after, the radio altimeter counting down the distance between the ground and the main landing gear. Five hundred. Two hundred.. fifty. Forty. Thirty. Closing the thrust-levers. Twenty; slightly raise the nose up while bleeding of airspeed. Ten... five... ground-contact imminent. The entire machine shudders and vibrates as the sixteen wheels of the main landing gear touch down; the speed brake lever moves up and we’re vibrating our way along the uneven asphalt, reversers deployed and nose coming down. Sí, sin ver pista ni entorno hasta el touchdown. El sistema ILS (Instrument Landing System) guía al avión con dos señales principales: Localizer (localizador): mantiene alineación con el centro de pista. Glide Slope (senda de planeo): guía el ángulo de descenso. Según la visibilidad y decisión del piloto/sistema se clasifican: ✈️ CAT I: DA 200 ft – visibilidad 550 m ✈️ CAT II: DA 100 ft – visibilidad 300 m ✈️ CAT III A: sin DA – visibilidad 200 m ✈️ CAT III B: sin DA – visibilidad 75 m ✈️ CAT III C: sin DA – sin mínimos DA = quiere decir Altitud de Decisión, donde se decide si se sigue la aproximación, o se realiza una aproximación frustrada. En CAT III Autoland (aterrizaje automático), los pilotos preparamos la aproximación y el avión aterriza automáticamente usando Flight Directors + Autopilot (piloto automático)+ Autothrottle (Aceleradores Automáticos) con redundancia de sistemas. Es la máxima expresión de la aviación instrumental moderna: precisión, tecnología y procedimientos. No es “aterrizar a ciegas”. Es volar con sistemas certificados, entrenamiento específico y procedimientos estandarizados que garantizan seguridad aun con niebla cerrada, niebla helada o RVR (visibilidad) crítica. The #pilot is manually controlling the landing, meaning controlling the power setting ( check out my left hand ) and keeping the aircraft on the glide slope ( vertical- up/down ) and localizer ( horizontal- left/right) all this while maintaining the calculated approach speed and landing in the touchdown zone and centerline. Yup, like some say, it’s easier that driving a car 🤣😂🤣…
