Corn earworms are evolving in ways we didn’t fully expect. Bt corn was designed to protect crops by stopping caterpillars in their tracks — but new research suggests the moths that survive may also be better built for long-distance flight. When we change the environment, insects respond, and understanding that back-and-forth is key to long-term pest management. #Entomology #BtCorn #AgricultureScience #PestManagement #InsectEvolution

Extremely simplified explanation, but here is a crazy caterpillar we found that was infested with parasitoid wasps! Parasitoid wasp females in the family Braconidae also inject a symbiotic virus along with her egg(s) which helps to control the caterpillar’s behavior and cause it to protect its own parasites. So freaky but also very fascinating! #entomology #braconidae #parasitoidwasp

The parasitic fungus Massospora cicadina infects periodical cicadas during their synchronized emergences. In infected males with Stage I infections, the fungus alters behavior so that males perform wing‑flick signals normally used by receptive females. These signals draw other males into close contact, increasing spore transmission within the active cicada chorus. In later stages, the infection shifts to producing resting spores that fall to soil and complete the life cycle by infecting future cicada generations. This complex host manipulation is thought to be a fungal extended phenotype that turns the cicada into a vehicle for its own spread. Source: Cooley, J.R., Marshall, D.C. & Hill, K.B.R. Cockroaches are insects belonging to the order Blattodea (Blattaria). About 30 cockroach species out of 4,600 are associated with human habitats. Some species are well-known pests. IN RESEARCH and EDUCATION 1️⃣ Because of their ease of rearing and resilience, cockroaches have been used as insect models in the laboratory, particularly in the fields of neurobiology, reproductive physiology and social behavior. 2️⃣ The cockroach is a convenient insect to study as it is large and simple to raise in a laboratory environment. This makes it suitable both for research and for school and undergraduate biology studies. 3️⃣ It can be used in experiments on topics such as learning, sexual pheromones, spatial orientation, aggression, activity rhythms and the biological clock, and behavioral ecology. 4️⃣ Research conducted in 2014 suggests that humans fear cockroaches the most, even more than mosquitoes, due to an evolutionary aversion. #biologistmom #cockroaches #thanksgivingpoint #insects #orderblattodea

Cicada broods are one of nature’s wildest time-keeping systems. These insects spend 13 or 17 years underground as nymphs, quietly feeding on tree root sap. Each brood is perfectly synchronized—millions of cicadas all counting the same invisible clock. When the year is right and the soil temperature hits about 64°F (18°C), they emerge together. This mass appearance isn’t random—it’s a survival hack called predator saturation. There are simply too many cicadas for predators to eat, so most survive to do their job. After emerging, cicadas shed their shells, climb trees, and the males start their loud buzzing to attract females. Within a few weeks, they mate, lay eggs, and die. The eggs hatch, tiny nymphs drop to the soil, and the whole cycle begins again—underground—for another 13 or 17 years. Short, noisy, legendary… then gone. Nature really said “wait years, trend for weeks.” 😄 #CicadaBrood #NatureExplained #HiddenLife #NatureCycle #13YearCicada  @bitzcasino

A large and hardy alternative to B.giganteus, these Blaberus sp. "Pico Bonito, Honduras" are likely an undescribed species IMO, and yet another example of why the genus Blaberus needs further study and a big revision. Hopefully someone will tackle that in the near future, this is such a ubiquitous genus in captivity and across the tropical Americas that I'm kinda surprised no one's done so yet. #blaberussphonduras #cockroach #entomology #roach #insects

Bitta alipes — a striking member of the family Coreidae, commonly known as leaf-footed bugs. Those dramatic “fancy boots” are expanded hind legs, likely functioning in anti-predator display and motion-based deception rather than courtship alone. Both males and females possess these vividly patterned appendages, suggesting a defensive evolutionary role. Distributed across Central and parts of South America, this species exemplifies how morphology, movement, and coloration converge as survival strategies in tropical ecosystems. Insects rarely shout — but when they do, it’s usually about survival. #BittaAlipes #LeafFootedBug #Coreidae #InsectMorphology #DefensiveAdaptation TropicalBiodiversity Entomology EvolutionaryEcology InsectBehavior NeotropicalFauna

There are 3 large Panchlora species currently in culture in the US, and by length metric I'd give Panchlora nivea "Tuscaloosa, Alabama" second place. Sp. "Guadeloupe" may be heavier and wider but doesn't tend to get as long. My colony's looking pretty dry today so they're getting a good waterint, along with most other things while the furnace is blasting constantly. #entomology #cockroach #bugsofinstagram #green
