Follow (us) 👉🏼 @TECHNOLOGY to learn something new everyday! 🤖 A digital camera the size of a sedan was recently completed with the hopes of gleaning new information about dark energy, dark matter, the Milky Way, and more. The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Camera will be mounted on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. The new imager weighs 6,600 pounds (3,000 kilograms) and the lens is roughly the height of a small adult at 5 feet (1.5 meters) across. Soon it will take unprecedented 3,200-megapixel images of the night sky, and over the next 10 years will map the positions and measure the brightness of a vast number of night-sky objects from which researchers can infer a wealth of information. Follow what comes next for the world’s largest digital camera, now fully installed at the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Once operational in 2025, Rubin will be jointly operated by the National Science Foundation (@NSF)'s NOIRLab, and the U.S. Department of Energy (@ENERGY)'s SLAC National Accelerator Lab. The first images captured by the 3.2-billion-pixel camera were taken by the LSST Camera installed at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. It is the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy and is designed to take extremely detailed images of the night sky. With a resolution of 3.2 gigapixels, a single photograph is so large that it would require hundreds of ultra-HD television screens to display it at full resolution. The purpose of this camera is to conduct the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), a 10-year survey that will repeatedly scan the entire southern sky. These high-resolution images help astronomers study distant galaxies, track asteroids, observe supernova explosions, and understand mysterious phenomena such as dark matter and dark energy. Instead, our summit staff use a high-speed stream of carbon dioxide "snow" to push debris off of the glass surface. 🌬️ Sound familiar? If so, you might recognize this as the same process our team uses to clean the telescope's mirrors as well! This cleaning method effectively removes debris without leaving any residue or water marks that would otherwise decrease our data quality. Stay tuned for the installation of the largest digital camera ever built! 👀 📷 --- ¡Sí, se lava la carita! (pero sin agua ni jabón 🤭) 🫧 ¡Tampoco sin frotar la delicada óptica del observatorio! No utilizamos paños ni líquidos para limpiar los lentes gigantes de las cámaras.
