Maaidesign Artist Collection ✨Coming Soon!✨ Maaidesign is releasing their new fabric collection called ARTIST COLLECTION - drop 1. My little piece is called Messy Flowers by Jennifer Bouron in a super smooth cotton lawn. It is beautifully lightweight and luxuriously smooth to feel. Maaidesign cotton lawn feels very silky and drapey. It’s woven at a very high thread count giving it that luxurious quality. This lightweight fabric is perfect for summer blouses and dresses. Maaike and the Maaidesign team have really curated the best quality fabrics which is great when you’re buying online. I feel that it’s easy to trust that you’re going to get the best for your sewing projects. So excited for this launch of the Maaidesign Artist Collection! I put together some simple tips for sewing with this super fine cotton lawn: 💙 Use a rotator blade to cut around curves 💙 Don’t skip the stay stitching 💙 Pin carefully before sewing 💙 Use a fine needle for cotton lawn like a 70/10 or 80/12 💙 It’s okay to use the overlocker to finish the seams 💙 Be gentle when pulling on the fabric Cotton lawn is a super stable and easy fabric to sew with but hopefully these tips make it even easier. The Artist Collections will include exclusive prints by @jeninuferu , @jn_jessicanielsen and @rou.cou.cou and will be featured in three fabric bases - cotton lawn, cotton jersey and viscose twill. I’ve FINALLY finished my #agnespjs from @paper_theory which I started earlier in the year, got up to the point of needing to attach buttons and then just stopped... Who would have known that a quick 20 minutes later, they would be finished and ready for bed tonight! 😆 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The fabric is a Nani Iro cotton double gauze from @maaidesign and is so soft and cosy. The label is from the KATM 2021 Advent Calendar and I am really feeling its message today - YAY indeed! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One notable thing about the pattern, which the team here at HQ pointed out, is that the top would make for a great button up shirt. Every handmade garment has a story—and this one started with a lucky fabric find! (Don’t you just love when that happens?) I was browsing fabric at MaaiDesign (what a great way to start a story, right? 😉) when I spotted this bold mustard coloured cotton knit velvet. And then—like some kind of sewing magic—I spotted this wide ribbing that matched perfectly. (ok, maybe not magic, the website did a great job of recommending it, but still—it was so exciting!) Honestly, that never happens. Ribbing always has to be a contrast colour because you can never colour match! Right away, I had a vision: something retro, something bold… something that looked like it walked straight out of the 1970s. I had an original 1970s pattern in mind—but instead of starting from scratch (and spending hours tweaking the fit), I took a smarter route—one I teach my students, inside VSS. I used my knit top block (that I had worked on and altered to fit me perfectly already) and added the design features from the vintage pattern. It cut my pattern prep time in half and guaranteed a great fit from the start. This is my favourite way to sew: start with a pattern that you already know and love, and customise it to match the idea in your head. Let's get down to the details: Fabric - 100% cotton knit velvet @maidesigns (I need more of this in my life!) Self-drafted pattern • Crossover v-neckline (for that retro vibe!) • Short sleeves finished with a matching ribbing band • Fitted waist also with matching ribbing band • 4-thread overlocked seams for stretch and durability Spray starch used on edges to help prevent fabric curling whilst sewing It’s the little details that turn a simple top into something really special.
