KAMagic e can be such a tricky concept to master. That’s why I love to use look alike words and teach my students how to code them. I don’t introduce magic e until my students have mastered reading and spelling words with short vowels, otherwise it will cause a ton of confusion.

THMAGIC E PAPER TOWEL ACTIVITY - As if learning to read wasn’t hard enough, our language throws in a curve ball to try and trick us up even more. Does anyone else have kids that get hung up on the ‘Magic e’ words?
Magic ‘e’ words are words that have an ‘e’ at the end of them to signify that a short vowel sound can be changed into a long vowel sound. The silent ‘e’ forces the preceding vowel to say its name.
💫 This magic paper towel activity is a fun and quick set up to help practice those tricky magic e word. Fold a piece of paper towel in half and write the word (without the e) on the front with marker (we used sharpies). On the inside of the paper towel add an ‘e’ in a different color.
💫 Have your child read the word shown on the front of the paper towel (without the e, using a short vowel sound)
💫 Gently lay the paper towel into a shallow tray of water. As the towel gets wet, the ‘e’ underneath will reveal itself. Have your child read the word again, this time with a long vowel sound.

TOTo help us understand the magic ‘e’ rule, let’s take a look at some everyday examples of how it applies to different words:
✅Tube
✅Kite
✅Hate
✅Cube
✅Space
✅Gape
In all of these examples, the silent ‘e’ at the end of each word informs how we pronounce the vowels that come before it. If we took the words ‘gape’ and ‘hate’ and removed the unspoken ‘e’, we would end up with the words ‘gap’ and ‘hat’. This lets us see how adding the silent ‘e’ sound causes the ‘a’ to become a long vowel sound(name of the letter).
Material used:

⭐️Cardboard strip
⭐️Paper fastener
Encourage your lil one to read the CVC word and then read it again with the magic e at the end.
