💥Voluntary maximal contraction is estimated to recruit somewhere around 70-90% of available motor units in most trained individuals. The remaining pool is “gated”- protected by inhibitory pathways for safety/survival. Reactive, reflexive loading under high velocity can access that protected pool because the reflex arc bypasses conscious motor command entirely. The spindle-mediated monosynaptic loop is faster than cortical intention. 🧬In addition, my belief that progressive, intentional exposure to controlled jerk stimuli (with appropriate tissue readiness) will prepare the system for collision and demands of sport is biomechanically sound- although not widely accepted. It follows the SAID and Henneman’s Size Principle at a more granular level than most practitioners consider. 1️⃣The catch phase trains end-range stretch-shortening cycle, where titin becomes a primary force contributor and elastic properties shift; a mechanism almost never accessed in conventional training. 2️⃣The unpredictability of the pendulum’s position at each catch develops reactive impedance control; the nervous system learning to modulate stiffness, damping and inertia in response to perturbations it can’t fully anticipate. That’s a different adaptation pathway than strength or even traditional plyometric training. 3️⃣The shear and torque component loads myofascial chains multi-directionally, driving both tendon remodeling and proprioceptive adaptation through fascial mechanoreceptors. And because the load is never perfectly identical rep to rep, high-threshold motor units are being recruited reactively; the pattern of recruitment that matters most in sport but is least trained in the gym. 4️⃣Prerequisite tissue prep and intentionality are non-negotiable here. The same properties that make this effective make it acutely risky without adequate preparation.
