COA new spacesuit design incorporates a urine recycling system.
This system is similar to the fictional "stillsuits" from the sci-fi franchise Dune.
Current spacesuits use a Maximum Absorbency Garment (MAG) which is basically an adult diaper. This is uncomfortable, unhygienic, and doesn't recycle water.
The new design uses a vacuum-based external catheter to collect urine.
The urine is then filtered through a two-step osmosis process to remove impurities and create drinkable water.
The filtration system is 87% efficient and takes only 5 minutes to process 500ml of urine.
The entire system is compact and lightweight (around 8kg) and fits into a backpack worn by the astronaut.
This new design is intended to improve comfort and hygiene for astronauts during long spacewalks, especially on missions to the Moon and Mars.
