NAHere’s just me at that silly mayfly bloom I was lucky enough to be told about while I was camping along the river in July of 2023.
This bloom was about 30 minutes south of my camp, right along the good ole’ Mason-Dixon Line, but in truth I would have driven 2 hours for this.
As I’ve said in previous posts, mayflies are an excellent indicator species, allowing insight into the overall health & wellbeing of the river ecosystems they emerge from, so a bloom like this is really an absolutely wonderful sight to see :)

Adult mayflies are among the most short-lived creatures in the natural world. Belonging to the order Ephemeroptera, their very name comes from the Greek word ephemeros, meaning “short-lived.” After spending months — sometimes even years — underwater as aquatic nymphs, feeding and growing in rivers and streams, they emerge as delicate winged adults with transparent, veined wings and long tail filaments. Yet this final stage of life often lasts only a few hours to a couple of days, depending on the species. Adult mayflies do not even have functional mouths; they cannot feed, because their sole biological purpose at that stage is reproduction. They rise in synchronized swarms, mate, lay eggs on the water’s surface, and then die shortly after. Despite their brief adulthood, mayflies play a vital ecological role as indicators of clean water and as a major food source for fish and birds. Their life cycle is a powerful reminder of nature’s precision — long preparation hidden beneath the surface, followed by a fleeting but purposeful emergence.

BEMayflies are the only aquatic insects with two molts in the adult stage. In this video the adult green drake is first a brilliant green dun and then undergoes a second molt (shedding a thin exoskeleton) and becomes a mature white/black spinner. Mayflies undergo an incredible and unique lifecycle!

CHIf the impossible should happen and the French Partridge Mayfly doesn’t work for you during mayfly season , I highly recommend switching to this one. A spent version that floats very well has often worked for me when other ones haven’t. Tie a few in different sizes and maybe use a little less yarn, to make a thinner wing, for small sizes. Apply for dry fly gel to the wings are you are ready to go. In the hidden world beneath the water’s surface, mayflies lead a secret life. As nymphs, they crawl around rocks and plants, feeding and growing. But in their final days, something incredible happens. They rise to the water’s surface, transform into winged creatures, they are still not safe and have to dodge hungry trout and fly to shore. Here, they change again, becoming delicate mayfly spinners. In a final burst of life, they gather above the water, find mates, and lay their eggs. Then, their journey ends, leaving behind the next generation to start the cycle anew.
