🧬 Speaking in London this week at AI in Drug Discovery and I want to break down why this actually matters for all of us. Developing a new drug used to take 10–15 years and cost over $1 billion. A lot of that time is spent reading research — millions of scientific papers, clinical trial results, lab findings. No human team can read it all. That’s where AI comes in. 🤖 Imagine you’re trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. AI can scan decades of published research in minutes, connect dots between a protein studied in 2003 and a gene mutation discovered last year, and suggest which drug compounds are worth testing before a single experiment is run. But here’s the catch and it’s what my talk is about: AI can only retrieve what it actually has access to. If the knowledge sources feeding it are incomplete, locked behind paywalls, or low quality… the AI doesn’t just fail silently. It makes things up. That’s not a minor bug when we’re talking about medicine. My session: “What your AI can’t retrieve, it will invent” because the quality of information behind AI systems isn’t just a technical problem. It’s a patient safety problem. Today, it’s reality. 🧬 CRISPR gene editing allows scientists to cut and modify DNA with unprecedented precision — opening the door to treating diseases that were once considered untreatable. But here’s something many people don’t realize: A scientific breakthrough is only the beginning. Turning a discovery into a real therapy takes years of research, clinical trials, regulatory approvals, funding, and specialized infrastructure. That’s why the next revolution in biotechnology isn’t just about discovery. It’s about translating breakthroughs into treatments that reach patients. And progress is already happening: ✅ In 2023, the FDA approved the first CRISPR-based therapy for sickle cell disease from Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics — priced at $2.2M per patient. ✅ In 2024, Eli Lilly and Company acquired Verve Therapeutics for $1.3B to accelerate gene-editing therapies for cardiovascular disease. ✅ Mammoth Biosciences, founded by Jennifer Doudna, signed a $100M partnership with Regeneron and is now valued at $1.4B. 👩‍🔬 Jennifer Doudna — Nobel Prize laureate — is now working to ensure CRISPR moves from the lab into the real world. Through the Innovative Genomics Institute, she aims to raise $1 billion to support the next generation of scientists and accelerate gene-editing therapies.
