Yellow leaves happen. But when yellowing **spreads up the plant fast**, that’s when growers should pay attention. Healthy plants sometimes recycle older leaves. But when the yellowing moves quickly, shows up early, or the plant suddenly looks stalled… it usually points to a system issue. Two very common causes growers overlook: pH lockout. The nutrients are present, but the plant cannot access them. Overwatering. Roots sit in wet soil too long and lose oxygen. Both situations make the plant look hungry even when food is present. That’s why experienced growers look at the **whole system**, not just the leaf color. Because leaves show the signal, but the root zone usually tells the story. The mistake is assuming **yellow always means something is wrong with feeding.** A lot of growers start adjusting bottles before they even check the basics. Before touching nutrients, check pH first. Feeding your plants… but the leaves are still turning yellow? Most growers immediately assume nitrogen deficiency. And sometimes they’re right. Nitrogen deficiency usually starts on the bottom leaves. They yellow fast, the whole leaf turns pale, then it eventually drops. But if you’re feeding and the plant still looks hungry, the problem might not be the nutrients. It might be pH lockout. The nutrients are there. The plant just can’t access them. Before you start adding more bottles, check the system that controls nutrient availability in the first place. Runoff pH tells the real story. Quick rule of thumb: Soil usually likes about 6.3 to 6.8 Coco or hydro usually runs 5.8 to 6.2 One small number can completely change how your plant eats.
