They aren’t floating because gravity is gone—they’re falling around Earth at the same speed the station is orbiting, about 28,000 km/h, so they never hit the ground. To our Earth-trained brains, this motion looks unnatural. Claims about astronauts “hanging by ropes” usually come from optical illusions. Reflections, lens flares, light refracting off visors, glass panels, or camera housings can appear like strings or wires. Add to that the fact that some educational clips mix real ISS footage with parabolic zero-G flight tests, and confusion spreads fast. Water behaving “wrong” is another big trigger. In space, liquids don’t pour—they cling and form spheres due to surface tension. That’s why astronauts use special cups and straw bags. When water appears to stick to a cup or float in place, it’s not fake—it’s physics behaving without gravity pulling everything down. The deeper issue is perception. Our brains evolved under Earth’s gravity, so slow motion, floating objects, and drifting humans feel staged—like a green screen. But they’re simply unfamiliar. The scientific reality: The ISS is a real, orbiting laboratory about 400 km above Earth, photographed thousands of times, tracked by amateurs worldwide, and visible to the naked eye during flyovers.
