I think I found a shiny Pokemon 👀 and a pretty rare one! ✨ Not long after I started microscopy, I saw this disco dancer tardigrade that @my.microscopic.world posted and I went CRAZY! I passed months trying to find this particular species because they look like gems under polarized light! Not only their muscle strands glow but their exoskeleton and their stomach know how to put an ambiance to a party 🕺🏻 You probably have seen the mama bear I posted two weeks ago which was huge, but since she was pregnant and pretty thick, the light couldn’t pass through her like it does with this one 🥰 Milnesium tardigrades, which is the name of this water bear genus, are cosmopolitan and carnivorous and they love to feed on nematodes and rotifers! Adult Milnesium can even swallow rotifers whole 😳 I’ll need to see it from my myself to believe it though 😂 These water bears are characterized by the presence of six peribuccal papillae which make their mouths look like little crowns 👑 and two lateral papillae. Their claws are also waaay longer than those I usually post about. These claws are also separated into independent primary and secondary branches. Milnesium can live up to 2 months and lay around 40 eggs during that time. This is a single-celled organism with an ingested, and still alive, microscopic multicellular organism inside its cell. . The single-celled organism is a Stentor. They can grow a few millimeters in length, the largest one I’ve seen was almost as long as a grain of rice. They feed on all sorts of microscopic organisms, and this one swallowed a multicellular organism, a rotifer with organs, a simple brain, muscles, and even two little eyes. . Single-celled organisms can be incredibly complex without having specialized cells like neurons to transfer signals, skin cells to protect their bodies, or stomach cells to release digestive enzymes. Instead of having specialized cells that form organs and systems, a single cell has to do everything with organelles and subcellular structures. . And the multicellular animal, the rotifer, is just like the larger animals you see with the naked eye, just microscopic. It’s composed of around a thousand cells, and all the cells in its body rely on one another to survive. The whole animal depends on all these systems working together to keep itself alive. .⠀ Stentor has tiny hair-like structures around its cell that beat and create a water current, drawing food into its cell-mouth, which is just a specialized compartment of the cell. As the rotifer gets swallowed, it’s wrapped into a bubble-like structure and forms a vacuole inside the Stentor’s cell. That vacuole quickly becomes almost as acidic as our stomach and melts down whatever is inside. . The rotifer was stretching itself to break out of the cell, and in a few frames you can actually see its foot making a hole through the Stentor’s cell. In the literature, there are a few reports of rotifers breaking free this way, but this one wasn’t as lucky. After about 30 minutes, it was completely still because of digestive enzymes. . I tried to explain the concept of unicellularity while keeping it within the word limit. I hope I managed! But feel free to ask if you have questions! Derived from the Greek word for “mouth,” stomata are essential for a plant’s survival. They act as the primary gateways for gas exchange, allowing the plant to “breathe.” How They Work • Guard Cells: Each pore is flanked by two specialized, kidney-shaped guard cells. These cells control the opening and closing of the pore. • Opening: When the plant has plenty of water, the guard cells become turgid (swollen), causing them to curve outward and open the pore. • Closing: When the plant is dehydrated or under stress (like extreme heat), the guard cells lose water, become flaccid, and collapse together to seal the pore shut. Why They are Important Stomata perform a delicate balancing act to keep the plant alive: 1. Photosynthesis: They open to let in Carbon Dioxide (CO_2), which the plant uses to make food. 2. Oxygen Release: As a byproduct of photosynthesis, Oxygen (O_2) is released back into the atmosphere through these same pores. 3. Transpiration: This is the process where water vapor escapes the plant. While it helps cool the plant and move nutrients up from the roots, too much water loss can be fatal, which is why stomata close during droughts. Fun Fact: Most land plants have the majority of their stomata on the underside of their leaves to shield them from direct sunlight and reduce unnecessary water loss.
