Most of us grew up believing we were “cursed” with a slow metabolism. And I hear you — we all have that one friend that can eat whatever they want and never gain weight. Meanwhile, you’re watching every bite … Why? But …. metabolism isn’t one switch you turn on or off. It’s a system, and at the core of it are your mitochondria and methylation (which is at the core of what I teach in the @bestie.app or do with supplements - so let me explain!). Think of mitochondria as tiny power plants inside your cells. Their job is to take the food you eat and convert it into ATP (the actual energy currency of your body - think of ATP AS USD$ in the US 🇺🇸 ). ATP is what powers everything: your muscles contracting during a workout, your brain firing thoughts, even your hormones being produced. When mitochondria are sluggish (from nutrient deficiencies, stress, toxins, lack of movement, or poor sleep), your ATP output drops. Less ATP = less energy burned, more stored. That “slow metabolism” feeling? It’s really low cellular energy. THATS HOW I HEALED MY ‘UNHEALEABLE’ HYPOTHYROIDISM. Now add methylation to the picture. Methylation is a biochemical process that helps your body “activate” vitamins, detox hormones, repair DNA, and even regulate neurotransmitters. If your methylation cycle is blocked (from low B vitamins, environmental toxins, or genetic variants like MTHFR WHCIH 50% of women have), your mitochondria don’t get the support they need to produce ATP efficiently. So what feels like “my metabolism is broken” is really your body saying: “My cells aren’t making energy properly.” Once you improve mitochondrial health (nutrients like magnesium, CoQ10, and B vitamins) and support methylation, energy production skyrockets. You start burning instead of storing — not because your metabolism got “faster,” but because your body finally has the cellular power to do what it’s designed to do. In simple terms: it’s not about eating less or punishing yourself for having a “slow metabolism.” It’s about giving your mitochondria and methylation what they need to make ATP — the energy that literally runs your life. let me know if this is helpful!

It started as liver failure, that results in me receiving 2 different liver transplants. One when I was 4 months old, and when I was 9 months old due to complications with the 1st transplant. Over the years, some of those include mitochondrial disease, gastroparesis, ehlers danlos syndrome, vertigo, protein/calorie malnutrition, anemia, traumatic brain injury, stroke, syncope, dysautonomia, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, congenital absence of inferior vena cava, Mitochondrial complex III deficiency, nuclear type 1 (MC3DN1). ~ABOUT BOOF~ Boof is a retired police dog, by no fault of her own. Health reasons cut her career short. (Hip issues) She is a 7 year old German Shepherd, who was trained for narcotics detection and apprehension.. She is working as an in home service dog myself. She does NOT do any PA. She loves car rides and exploring though, so she does go with us often when we are out doing Doordash deliveries. One of the questions I get asked most by people who learn about my job and the area of rare disease research I work in is - “What are mitochondria?!”… which is closely followed by “…And what is mitochondrial disease?!” 👀 . So, we’re going back to basics and I’m going to try and take you through what are mitochondria, with some every day examples, and what is mitochondrial disease? . One of my favourite examples is using the analogy of batteries. Mitochondria are like the batteries of the body, powering everything we do. When there is a problem with those batteries, our bodies don’t work properly, and that is mitochondrial disease 💁🏻‍♀️ . We often talk about how hard it is to build endurance fitness, but what about losing it? In 1984, Coyle and colleagues tracked seven highly trained athletes who stopped training for three months. In 6 days, mitochondrial enzymes were down ~8%. In 12 days, VO₂max ↓7% and stroke volume ↓10%. Remember, these determine VO2 max, and explain why oxygen consumption drops. By 3 months, VO₂max ↓16%, enzymes nearly 40% lower… but capillary density still elevated (capillaries ftw). The early drop is largely cardiac (less plasma volume, lower stroke volume), while the later losses come from muscle metabolism. But long-term training leaves fingerprints, some adaptations persist even after months off. Endurance fitness is fragile but not fleeting. It starts to unravel in days, but the foundation you’ve built doesn’t vanish overnight.
