WOI can’t say this enough… Your dog should always be able to fully pant in a muzzle.
Dogs regulate their body temperature by panting.
If the muzzle is too tight and doesn’t allow the mouth to open properly, it increases the risk of overheating. Especially now in summer the risk for overheating is high.
Not every dog needs a muzzle, but many dogs will wear one at some point- public transport, breed laws, vet visits, training, or other situations.
Whatever the reason:
make sure the muzzle fits properly and allows a full pant.
Safety should never restrict your dog’s ability to breathe and cool down

NOMuzzles are for ALL dogs.
Whether your dog is a grumpy gus, likes to eat things he shouldn’t, needs it for sport or may need on in an emergency…
you should WANT your dog happily conditioned to a muzzle.
So here’s a speed round of how to do just that! (There will be an in depth video coming soon to my new work-in-progress website)
✨In the beginning, a lot of dogs may either a) not want to stick their nose in the muzzle or b) stick their head in really fast, grab one piece and bolt.
That’s okay! We’re not worried about duration in the beginning, just exposure and making it fun. Use something REALLY tasty like to entice your dog.
If your dog says HARD NO start even smaller by rewarding for looking at the muzzle, then sniffing it, then licking it (so on and so forth.)
✨I like to use some form of basket muzzle because they’re the easiest to feed dogs through.
✨Once your dog is comfy with the muzzle on, up the ante and make it FUN.
Do some of your dog’s favorite activities with the muzzle on (hike, go for a walk, etc.)

SU⚠️ Not a tutorial – just showing what muzzle training looked (still looks) like for us.
I’m not a trainer, just a dog person sharing what worked for Suki.
I will share with you the advice I received from trainers which helped me the most:
🐢 Go at your dog’s pace: don’t follow someone else’s timeline.
🐶 Let the dog put the muzzle on - not you: consent builds trust. I’ve never moved the muzzle toward Suki, she chooses to put her nose in. That choice really matters.
⏱️ Keep sessions short: ours were usually under 5 minutes.
🎾 Offer loads of breaks: I’d release Suki and throw treats across the room for her to get. It kept her engaged and gave her a little mental reset between reps.
👃 Find the right muzzle for your dog: if your dog’s uncomfortable despite proper conditioning, the muzzle itself MIGHT be the issue instead of the training. Comfort matters.
🔥 Warm up every time: start simple. Nose in, treat, done. Then build from there. Think of it like a little pre-workout.
This is just what worked for us, but your dog might need something different, and that’s okay. When in doubt, work with a qualified trainer who understands your dog’s needs.

BIWait for it… 🤣🤣🤣 I can’t believe I didn’t even register the screech coming from a frustrated muzzler inside 😅🤣 Apparently she was frustrated because I took her muzzle to video it when she was trying to package it 😅 As she put it, “Have I mentioned I am thankful for a workplace i can vaguely wail in distress when needed and it’s not questioned?” When I finally watched it back later, I started literally crying laughing uncontrollably 🤣❤️

RIIn an ideal world dogs wouldn’t have to wear muzzles, but we don’t live in an ideal world and dogs fears and habits don’t go away over night. In the mean time we still need to take them to the vet and not let them bite anyone, go on a walk and not let them eat harmful objects or food, train with assurance no one will get hurt, follow laws, the list goes on. There are a lot of reasons to muzzle train a dog and most dogs are capable of biting in the right situation but there are NOT a lot of reasons to put down those using a muzzle. It’s like putting down someone for using a leash or a seatbelt. It’s safety equipment. Ask questions if you aren’t informed about muzzles but don’t assume the dog is leading a sad life, it’s usually quite the opposite. Our muzzle is from @the.muzzle.movement

TRMuzzles aren’t just for biting. 🤷
Greta had a routine vet visit today. She takes medication to reduce stress during her visits. It works really well. Like any medication, it has side effects. The most annoying one is polyphagia – aka the munchies!
She wears her basket muzzle at the vet, but after we get home, she gets to put on her loungewear. This mesh muzzle is big enough that she can play normally, but she can’t eat random things.

WLMy dog has been muzzled for 2 weeks, and I honestly didn’t see this coming…
I have to admit, it’s going a lot smoother than I thought it would. Jett is a very friendly boy, but he’s a huge scavenger. After numerous emergency vet visits and middle-of-the-night puking 🤢, our vet told us he needed to be muzzled. So we did.
Here were my fears:
• He would hate the muzzle and it would take weeks for him to get used to it 😔
• People would be scared of him and cross the street
• Other dogs would react poorly and not want to play with him
What actually happened:
• He was totally fine with the muzzle by day 3, as soon as he realized he gets the best cookies when he wears it 🍪
• He tried to take it off at first, but eventually gave up
• The only thing he finds annoying is the strap between his eyes, so we’re currently looking for alternative muzzles that don’t have that
Some people are scared and do cross the street. Some are hesitant to get into the elevator with us. But surprisingly, others have actually approached me and asked if they could pet him 🥹 That truly shocked me—in the best way. Honestly, that’s how it should always be, muzzle or not. People should always ask for permission. It really warms my heart to see the stigma around muzzles slowly changing ❤️
One dog did react badly to the muzzle, which was very confusing for Jett—especially since that’s a dog he usually plays with. That dog was just unsure about the muzzle and reacted in a very normal “I don’t understand this” dog way. Jett was so confused about why his friend was growling 😢 Now we know to remove the muzzle when we see dogs approaching.
Most importantly, he is safe 🛡️
We enjoy our walks so much more now and let him sniff to his heart’s content because we’re no longer afraid he’ll eat something he shouldn’t. He’s also gotten much better on the leash—mainly because we now keep it loose no matter how much trash is on the streets 🗑️🐕
Idk who needs to hear this, but: choose your dog first. Everything else doesn’t matter—and you may be surprised how well it’s received on the other side of the leash 🖤🐾
