This method allows for a more spatial effective way for students to identify repeating steps. But before we jump in just a little reminder…. With standard long division we follow the following steps: ◉ Divide, ÷ ◉ Multiply, × ◉ Subtract, - ◉ Bring It Down ↓ *Repeat until their are no more space* ◉ Remainder, r Now, If you got this down, then you already know box method. So many math curriculums use the buzz words “inquiry-based” and “student led.” But these ideas only sound good in practice as they are inequitable and essentially leave the teaching up to the kids. When it comes to math acquisition, we need to start with knowledge building and number sense instruction which will eventually allow kids to have these deeper problem-solving discussions and engage in inquiry. ➕➖✖️➗ Also, this is NOT related to the idea of “New Math” or “Common Core Math.” Common Core state standards are not a way to teach math; rather they are a set of standards/skills kids should master in math by grade level. “New math,”to me, is referring to the idea that there are other strategies than the traditional algorithms to solve math problems often involving breaking down concepts much more deeply. As long as these strategies are valid, knowledge-building, and explicitly taught, this is okay! 🧮 #mathcrisis #explicitinstruction #directinstruction #mathteacher #newmath #teacher #matheducation #mathliteracy #numeracy #mathforall #closingthemathgap

Giving students time to figure the math out will help them remember it for longer! Just teaching them steps to remember leads to shallow understanding (& LOWER test scores!!) Instead do this: 1- let students problem solve & figure it out 2- notice their discoveries 3- name it ("that's right, you can add up jumps on a number line just like you can with just equations!") If they discover it and describe it, then you help them formalize it they will remember it longer! 🤩 I'm Mona, an elementary teacher turned math coach and consultant ;& soon to be published author!). I changed my approach to teaching math from teacher driven classes with lowest test scores in the building to student centered math with EVERY child exceeding their growth goal & over half meeting grade level standards--- in ONE YEAR! If I can take kids that are years behind to mastering grade level standards by doing less problems and letting students talk more, 👏🏽 YOU can TOO!! This is why you can't help with 3rd grade math anymore 👀 Every week, frustrated parents message me: "I have an engineering degree, but I can't help my 8-year-old with math homework" Here's what's actually happening: • Your child learns through conceptual understanding 🧠 • You learned through procedural memorization. • When they show you their "new way" of solving 23 + 47, they're building number sense. The problem? When you say "just do it the easy way," you're accidentally telling them their method is wrong 🙅🏾 This creates confusion and destroys confidence. As an educator who's worked with thousands of families, here's my advice: • Instead of teaching them YOUR way → Ask them to teach you THEIR way 👏 • AI tools can bridge this gap perfectly. I understand that this helps long term, and that breaking things down by tens MAKES SENSE. BUT I NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE HOW AND THE WHY. . . How do we know to start with 10 and the original problem? Why do we then switch to addition with the answer? How do we understand these order of operations? Which Greek something or other found this method? Or was it Mrs. Sally from 2002? . .
