🦠 Phytoplankton are microscopic algae that provide food for many ocean species. However, when some grow in large numbers they can produce toxic ☣️ compounds that have harmful effects on habitats and humans alike. We participate in regular phytoplankton surveys with @noaa South Carolina Phytoplankton Monitoring Network 🤝 to help identify the species that inhabit our waters and monitor harmful algal blooms in our region. We then report our findings to the NOAA Marine Biotoxin Program for further research. 🔬 These are just a few of the incredible species we find right here in the Charleston Harbor! 🌊 . . #aquarium #southcarolinaaquarium #phytoplankton #noaa

I’m outraged. Giant Oceanic Manta Rays are critically endangered, and protected by #noaa HOWEVER it’s totally legal per #fwc permits for companies like #dynastymarine in Marathon FL Keys to capture these species, for profit, and sell them off to places like Abu Dhabi for #seaworld aquariums. THIS IS NOT CONSERVATION OR EDUCATION. Female Giant Oceanic manta rays, like this female captured in the video, only give birth to 1 pup every 3-5 years, and it takes 12-13 months gestation! Capturing just one female can contribute to collapse of the population. Oceanic Manta Rays travel thousands of miles per year! That’s 2x around the earths equator in a lifetime. NO aquarium is large enough to provide suitable living environment for a wild Manta. I’ve never seen a giant oceanic manta ray in FL waters before, this capture was just off Panama City, FL. They are very rare here. And now there’s one less. 😢 Please, share and tag authorities and celebrities to spread the word, exploiting endangered species for human profit is unacceptable! These legal “special” licenses must be revoked! Join Jeri Wilcox as she takes to the skies with @noaa and the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E)! 🌧️✈️ @flynoaa Jeri is a research data analyst with CW3E and alumna of Scripps’ Master of Advanced Studies in Climate Science and Policy program (@scripps_mascsp). She recently worked aboard a research flight aimed at studying atmospheric rivers to improve forecasts and strengthen water resilience. These flights—made possible thanks to a collaboration with NOAA, the @cadepartmentofwaterresources, @usacehq and @usafreserve—are critical for understanding extreme weather events like atmospheric rivers and their impacts on water supply across the U.S. West Coast. Data gathered on these missions also feeds into weather forecast models that have been shown to improve the prediction of storm landfall location and precipitation amounts on the West Coast and the broader continental U.S. This information is essential for generating life-saving alerts ahead of hazardous storms and for water resource managers to more flexibly operate reservoirs to improve our water supply reliability. Without research funding, progress stalls. The discoveries of tomorrow depend on the support we give today. Join us in advocating for federal research funding. A new @noaa -supported study with @scripps_ocean, @scripps_mbarc, @mbari_news, and @usnavy reveals how fish in federally protected national marine sanctuaries off the U.S. West Coast “share” the underwater soundscape—from plainfin midshipman humming in shallow waters to deep-dwelling bocaccio rockfish. Using 18 years of recordings, researchers mapped the who, when, and where of fish chorusing—critical insights for protecting key spawning and feeding habitats in Chumash Heritage, Monterey Bay, and Channel Islands national marine sanctuaries.
