FUResearchers at MIT Media Lab and Harvard University have developed an experimental device called The Anemoia Device that explores how scent could be added to photographic images. Using AI, the system analyzes a printed photo, generates a narrative perspective, and translates that description into a physical fragrance blend.
The device combines image analysis, language models, and a tactile interface that lets users select a subject, a temporal context, and an emotional tone. These inputs are synthesized into a short narrative and mapped to a small library of fragrance oils, which are mixed in precise quantities to produce a scent that accompanies the image. Rather than recreating real memories, the device constructs imagined ones through a multisensory interaction with photographs.
