Europe should look at what the UAE have created. They’re number three in AI now and they have nothing to do with Europe in terms of regulation. So the answer to Europe is, after the Second World War, they screwed themselves. They put a regulatory environment in so onerous that everybody just brought their dough to the United States and developed their companies here and stole the people that were innovators. And I rest my case on this one: we took the guys that were bombing us, the V-2 rocket scientists, and made them Americans and stuck them here and they built NASA. I mean, that’s Europe losing the best and brightest geniuses. By the way, we shouldn’t change that policy. We should keep bringing over any genius from anywhere and train them here, otherwise the Chinese will.

Why they’re comparable: 1950s Jim Crow tools (literacy tests, poll taxes, onerous ID or residency requirements, and discretionary local administration) functioned to exclude Black voters by imposing bureaucratic hurdles and discretionary judgments; the SAVE Act would similarly require documentary proofs many people lack, create automated verification/removal systems, and empower officials to adjudicate disputed eligibility mechanisms that can produce widespread disenfranchisement even if the law’s text is facially neutral. Practical implication: Even without explicit racial language, a law that systematically burdens groups who historically faced suppression (Black, Native, low‑income, immigrant‑origin citizens, students, elderly, homeless) can replicate the functional outcome of Jim Crow era tactics reduced registration and turnout among those communities making the comparison apt as a description of likely effects, though different in legal form and historical context.

How much time, effort and taxpayer money went into pursuing this pet project? Where are the priorities for this Government? Clearly they did not do their homework... were the “onerous conditions” not discussed at face to face meetings between the Deputy Premier and her entourage and the clubs in Italy? Italy is a very long way to go at taxpayers’ expense to not have these details sorted out. This is what happens when one person is setting the Government agenda - and is allowed to get away with it.
