REI’ve told people this before and I’ll say it again…
CENTRETOWN isn’t for everyone
Unless you’re ok with the realities of downtown living 👇
1) High-density city living (not “quiet suburb” vibes)
Centretown is one of the densest areas in Ottawa — ~25,687 people in ~2.1 km² (~12,232 people/km²).
Translation: more foot traffic, more noise, more “stuff happening” outside your door.
2) Apartment/condo-heavy lifestyle
The broader Ottawa Centre area is very apartment-dominant, including ~26,995 households living in apartment buildings 5+ storeys (plus thousands more in low-rise buildings).
If you want a big backyard + driveway + silence… Centretown usually isn’t that.
3) Parking can be a daily headache
If you rely on street parking, it’s something you need to plan around. Even municipal lots are typically paid during weekdays (example: $1.50 per 30 min, up to $13 max in posted periods).
If you’re buying a condo, parking (owned vs rented) matters a LOT.
4) Nightlife energy (and the noise that comes with it)
Centretown/Elgin is a known nightlife area—great if you love going out… not great if you need it dead quiet early.
5) Condo market = more choice right now
Ottawa’s condo/apartment segment has been the softest part of the market, with months of inventory around 7.9 (more selection, more negotiating power for buyers).
This can be a positive… if you know how to pick the right building (fees, reserve fund, management, etc.).
6) Small households + urban lifestyle
Ottawa Centre has a high share of smaller households (example: ~29,670 one-person households; avg household size ~1.9).
Translation: the vibe tends to skew more “urban + convenience” than “family cul-de-sac.”
