OTTB getting ready to come to a rodeo near you! Is he easy? No. But he has so much to give and I am so glad we never gave up on eachother. The cool part is, he’s doing well & we aren’t even there (quite yet)🤍 Follow along as I take this account through the process as we train/travel/fill my permit and hit the pro-rodeo circuit next year. Katie has always communicated by bitting, and it’s not something I correct her for. It is very, very rarely directed towards someone, and I want her to tell me when something doesn’t feel quite right. The coldest part of the winter is done, but now we’re faced with something that’s even harder on the horses: the wet, muddy season. Katie likes to play, and it often results in her slipping in ways that make her uncomfortable. I won’t correct her for communicating, even if her behavior is often seen as “rude” or “unsafe”. It’s my job as her owner to help her in any way I can. Allowing her to communicate without fear of punishment make that so much easier. #equestrian #horses #consent #ottb #positivereinforcement

Dee tends to hold quite a lot of tension through her back, and she’s still developing her topline after racing 🐎 With guidance from our physio we’ve started doing this little post-ride routine most days: • heat on the back • belly and back lifts • neck carrot stretches Just a few minutes to help her relax and release after work 🤍 She’s really started to enjoy this and can get quite huffy if I have to skip her spa treatment for a day 🤣 Do you have any hacks or tips on heat pads, carrot stretches or massage tools? 🙈 #ottb #exracehorse #equestrianlife #horselife

Here is what I was thinking in that moment: “If I try to document this series, people are going to see how messy we started in the beginning and tell me I’m doing it all wrong. They’re going to question his wellbeing because of the cribbing collar. They’re going to tell me I don’t know what I’m doing. They’re going to tell me I’m being too soft and that I’m being too harsh. They’re going to tell me I’m being ignorant to something they believe is the true issue, without ever meeting the horse or asking for more context.” Suddenly, it didn’t feel worth it to share. It didn’t feel worth it to try. I love this horse so deeply, and I just want to help him be as comfortable and happy as he can be. It’s such a fragile hope that I carry, and sharing it with the internet is a vulnerable thing. But the truth is, many of us work with difficult horses. And I like to believe everyone is trying their best. I’d like other people to believe I am trying my best, too. I may not be perfect. I may not know everything there is to know about horses. But if not me, then who? If everyone is shamed and chased off from working through a horse’s health issues or behavioral issues, the horse will always lose. So I’m trying to pick myself back up and keep at it. We’re all learning together, and if sharing my journey helps even one person stay determined in helping their horse, then it will be worth it. Not everyone wants a thoroughbred, I've seen SO many people blow up and scream at someone for not wanting a thoroughbred, just because they "can" do any sport doesn't mean someone has to buy a Thoroughbred especially an OTTB. People have preference for conformation, looks, temperament etc and or don't want a horse who was started and raced at two or younger. I had a OTTB and I have a non raced thoroughbred, sure I love both but I sure won't be getting another OTTB, I don't want a horse who was ridden before three years old and quite frankly I'm just not a huge fan of the breed - as you watch me adore my thoroughbred lol. I see a lot of people screaming about how amazing this breed is and getting pissy and nasty with anyone who doesn't like or want one, more than ANY other, I've never heard a QH owner scream at someone for not wanting a QH or a Friesian owner or a Mustang owner... only Thoroughbred owners have this beef with people. #horsegirl #equestrian #foryoupage❤️❤️ #fyp #horse
