Three quick ways to explain PDA (pathological demand avoidance or persistent drive for autonomy) — short, practical, and rooted in lived experience. 1) Nervous system: for many neurodivergent people, a demand can register like danger. Anxiety spikes; fight/flight/freeze follows — so avoidance is a safety strategy, not wilful disobedience. 2) Autonomy: PDA often shows as a strong need for choice. Collab, offer options, reduce pressure — that’s the support that works. 3) Day‑to‑day: “They were fine until I asked.” The ask is the trigger. Make the moment feel chosen. #pda #neurodiversity #demandavoidance #neurodivergent

For those who dont know, PDA is pathalogical demand avoidance. Obviously, this is a one minute clip = in reality this would go on for over an hour with a lot more meltdowns. People ask why we are late and really we should only need to say PDA. Then it explains everything. 🤣 #pda #pathalogicaldemandavoidance #pdaautism #pdalife #autism #autismmum #autistictraits

LIVE: Pathological Demand Avoidance: What It Is and How to Support Positive Engagement and Participation Comment: PDA for the link! Live on Thursday- 11/20 at 11am EST / 0.15 AOTA CEUs included! Presented by @loribensonadams 💡 The details ⤵️ Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is gaining attention, and for good reason. While it can look similar to Oppositional Defiant Disorder, research shows PDA is not about defiance or disobedience, but rather an anxiety-driven need for control. Children and teens with PDA often feel overwhelmed and powerless in their daily lives, leading to avoidant, refusal, or even aggressive behaviors. Traditional approaches like reward charts, consequences, or even sensory strategies often fall short. This 90-minute webinar helps you reframe PDA behaviors as signs of a stressed, overloaded nervous system, rather than willful misbehavior. You’ll gain a clear understanding of the latest research, a compassionate mindset shift, and practical, effective tools you can start using right away to support kids in distress. Perfect for parents, educators, and therapists who want to move from frustration to connection. Join live or watch the recording, you’ll still earn CEUs! Demand Avoidance… let’s talk about it ↓ Demand avoidance refers to an anxiety-driven aversion to anything we perceive as a demand or expectation placed on us. It can be obvious and straightforward (like in the example from this video) - but it also shows up in subtler ways: avoiding tasks with due dates, skipping events that feel like obligations (even if part of us genuinely wants to go) or procrastinating on things we care about. ➡️ So what’s actually going on when we experience demand avoidance? At its core, demand avoidance is often an internal struggle for autonomy - a fight to feel agency over our body & behaviour. For many, it’s a trauma response. Not a pathology, but a yearning to feel free. If we’ve had past experiences where our sense of control was taken from us, our nervous system may now interpret any expectation as a threat. Even neutral or positive tasks can feel like pressure. Our system reacts by shutting down or resisting. It’s an attempt at survival. Have you experienced this? If so, it’s worth exploring your relationship with freedom, with expression, with autonomy ☄️ - - [The magnitude of one’s demand avoidance can differ from person to person and has been correlated with ADHD & autism, see Pathological Demand Avoidance. This is not a diagnosis & there can be other explanations] - - - #demandavoidance #pda #avoidance #cptsd #nervoussystemregulation #fightflight #control #autonomy #holistic #healing

Autism Level 1 isn’t “mild.” It’s invisible. Which means it’s often misunderstood, minimized, or outright dismissed. Because what people don’t see is where most of it lives. It shows up as: – Extreme masking that holds it together all day and collapses at home – Anxiety that looks like control, rigidity, or “attitude” – Meltdowns that are internalized, delayed, or saved for the safest person – Sensory overwhelm that doesn’t always look dramatic—but is constant – Exhaustion from performing “fine” in a world that isn’t built for their nervous system – A child who is praised for being articulate, capable, or smart… while quietly drowning It also often shows up as PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance / Pervasive Drive for Autonomy)— where everyday demands trigger a threat response, not defiance. In those moments, behavior can escalate fast: – Verbal aggression – Physical outbursts – Sudden rage that seems to come out of nowhere Not because the child is violent or oppositional—but because their nervous system feels trapped. This isn’t “bad behavior.” It’s fight-or-flight. And here’s what’s critical to understand: Most autistic kids—including those with Level 1 support needs—are far more likely to internalize distress than externalize it. When aggression does show up, it’s almost always situational, relational, and rooted in overwhelm—not intent. There is nothing mild about chronic nervous system overload. There is nothing mild about living in a constant state of vigilance. There is nothing mild about a child who is trying desperately to stay in control of their own body and mind. “Level 1” doesn’t mean low impact. It means low visibility. And when something is invisible, parents are left fighting to be believed, kids are left without support, and everyone is told they’re overreacting. You’re not. And neither is your child. 🫶 #autism #asdmom #asdparenting #asdparent #autismacceptance #audhd
