Have you ever heard a random “r” sneak into a sentence… like in: “I saw(r) a movie” or “the idea(r) of it”? 👀 What’s going on there? That’s called the intrusive R. It happens in non-rhotic accents (like many British accents), where speakers don’t normally pronounce “r” at the end of words… unless a vowel comes next. So, to avoid two vowel sounds crashing into each other, they insert a little /r/ to smooth things out. BUT here’s the key part 👇 it doesn’t happen after any vowel. It usually shows up after these sounds: – /ɑː/ → like spa – /ɔː/ → like law, saw – /ə/ → like sofa, comma – /ɪə/ → like idea 👉 and ONLY when the next word starts with a vowel. so: “law and” → law(r) and “idea of” → idea(r) of “sofa is” → sofa(r) is It’s basically a bridge sound between vowels. If you want to sound more British, you can try it… but you don’t have to use it. What does matter is recognizing it to understand native speakers better.
