Picky eating can feel like you’re negotiating with a tiny but stubborn diplomat. “You’re so picky!” “Just one bite!” “Eat your broccoli, it’s good for you!”   Here’s the thing-how we talk about food matters as much as what’s on the plate. Words can either make kids curious… or shut them down. And while I don’t usually love the term “picky” (because it can stick as a label), I’m using it here since it’s what most parents search for when they’re looking for help. What I really want you to think about is that your child is still learning about certain foods-because that’s what’s actually happening.   Instead of labeling them “picky,” try: “Looks like you’re still learning about that one.” It normalizes the process and keeps the door open.   Instead of lecturing about nutrition, let them see you enjoying the food. Kids watch more than they listen-if you’re happily munching green beans, they’re more likely to wonder what they’re missing.   Give them a “No Thank You” bowl. It’s a safe spot for food they’re not ready for yet. It keeps mealtimes calm and still counts as exposure-because touching and smelling the food is progress.   Always pair something new with a safe food they already like. It anchors the meal and gives them confidence to explore without feeling cornered.   And if you really want to spark curiosity? Keep it playful. A carrot can be a “sword.” Broccoli can be “dino trees.” Play breaks down resistance way faster than pressure ever will.   Progress with picky eating isn’t just the bite-it’s all the little steps along the way. Want my full 7 pediatrician-backed tips to help your picky eater try new foods (no bribes needed)? Drop YOUTUBE LINK in the comments and I’ll send it your way. And subscribe to PedsDocTalk on YouTube so you never miss my free weekly parenting videos.   Has your child gone through a “picky” eating phase or are you in the thick of it right now? Share what’s helped you keep mealtimes calm and encourage new foods. Your tip might be exactly what another parent needs to hear.

Mom hack: turn carrots into fries & pair w ranch🍟 Follow + comment CARROT for the recipe deets If your toddler seems to hate all veggies, don’t give up! I know it can feel defeating, but truly there are so many ways to serve them & it can take multiple exposures until they try a bite 🫶🏼 Let them play & explore on their own, pair them w their favorite dip, talk about them vs asking to take a bite, be silly w them (pretend you or they’re a rabbit lol) It’s totally possible for your toddler to develop a love or interest in veggies, just may take a diff approach🥲 Save to make later & send to a mom who needs a new veggie win!!! And if you’re tired of food ruts or constant food refusals—comment READY to start making changes! Let’s nourish the whole fam (including your picky toddler) together 🤎 #toddlermoms #toddlermeals #dietitianmom #feedinglittles #toddlerfood #pickyeaters #pickyeating #pickytoddler #feedingtoddlers #toddlerfoodideas #toddlerfood

Picky eating can be a normal phase that children go through around 18 months to 3 years of age. This is due to food neophobia, or the fear of new foods (which served children from an evolutionary standpoint because it protects them from ingesting potentially dangerous substances), which can be part of typical development. How we respond to our children’s picky eating can determine if it is a phase that they will outgrow within a few weeks to months, or if it snowballs into more serious and long-term picky eating. This is why it’s so important to maintain structure and routine around feeding, and maintain the Division of Responsibilities (it is the parent’s responsibility to determine what is served at meals, and when and where meals are served, and it is the child’s responsibility to decide whether or not they eat the food that is served, and how much they eat- this only works if we serve at least 1 food at each meal we know our child usually eats). When “typical” picky eating starts to snowball out of control, we typically see these roles get reversed (the child is deciding what they are served at meals, they are deciding when and where they eat; and parents often end up pressuring their children to eat, which makes picky eating worse). “Typical” picky eating is when your child is eating the family meals well and then starts to become pickier some time between 18 months to 3 years of age. If your child was “always picky” there is likely something else going on (e.g. oral motor skills, GI issues, food intolerances, sensory processing). If they became picky after 3 years of age, there may also be something else going on. If you have concerns with your child’s feeding skills (e.g. your child isn’t transitioning off of purées, coughing with eating/drinking, excessive gagging, refusal to try new foods, significantly limited accepted foods, mealtimes are stressful), consider a feeding evaluation with a feeding therapist (speech-language pathologist or occupational therapist). #toddlermeals #pickyeating #responsivefeeding #babyledfeeding #slpsofinstagram #feedingtherapy

Picky eating is a natural part of toddlerhood. If your toddler seems more reluctant to try unfamiliar foods than they were as a baby, it’s likely because they’ve developed an age-appropriate fear of new things. We love these insights and tips from @kidfriendly.meals and seeing this little one navigate mealtime. As the video shows, giving a child time to explore a first-time food can help them feel more comfortable about eating it. Try letting your toddler investigate with implements and all of their senses. They can: 🍴 Use a fork to poke the food. ✋ Touch it with their hands. 👃 Smell it. 😗 Bring it to their mouth to feel it on their lips. 😋 Lick it. 👶 Put it in their mouth and then take it out again. ❤️If you have any concerns about your child’s eating, talk to their pediatrician. #Lovevery #PickyEating #ToddlerLife #Toddlers

Here are practical, scientifically proven tips to reduce picky eating in kids 👶🍽️ 🌿 1. Make mealtime happy & stress-free Avoid forcing, bribing, or scolding during meals.Keep the environment calm and pleasant — no TV, no distractions. 🍎 2. Offer variety early and often Keep introducing new foods even if rejected the first few times — it can take 10–15 exposures for acceptance.Offer small portions of new foods alongside familiar favorites. 👩‍👧 3. Eat together as a family Kids learn by watching. When they see you enjoying fruits, veggies, or dal–roti, they’re more likely to try them too. 🍴 4. Follow the “division of responsibility” rule Parent’s job: Decide what, when, and where to offer food. Child’s job: Decide whether and how much to eat. 🥣 5. Keep portions small ( very underrated)- works very well. Big servings can overwhelm kids. Start with less and let them ask for more. You can always add more quantity and extra servings. 💧 6. Limit - milk & snacks. Too much milk or snacks fill them up before meals. Offer 2 milk feeds per day and avoid grazing between meals. 🌈 7. Make food fun and appealing Use colorful plates, cut fruits into fun shapes, or make smiley sandwiches.Serve a mix of textures and colors — kids eat with their eyes first! 🕐 8. Stick to a meal routine Offer meals and snacks at regular times so kids come to the table hungry, not full of random snacks 🧘‍♀️ 9. Respect appetite changes Growth spurts and slower phases are normal — some days they eat more, some less. 💪 10. Involve kids in cooking Let them wash veggies, stir, or serve food. Kids eat better when they feel ownership of the meal. 💡Let's talk neurodivergent kids and 'picky eating' Firstly, let me tell you that a personalised approach is the best one. Short of that, you want someone to help you who understands how to implement strategies with neurodivergent children. You also want someone who believes that your child is not self-starving on purpose... I work with a lot of neurodivergent and neurotypical families and over the last few years I've learnt an awful lot about how to help them get results with their kids. 🎉One of my neurodivergent clients gained 3 kg in the last 3 months after gaining nothing for over a year. 🎉 Another client went from not eating any lunch at school because of appetite suppressing meds to eating lunch and supporting his blood glucose levels (he has type 1 diabetes) 🎉 Another tried and ate pasta noodles for literally the first time in his life If you want help like this, amazing!! You can either DM to talk about coaching or join the waitlist for my new membership website that'll support you making positive changes at mealtimes. You'll get access to: 👉 Video tutorials on a variety of topics with strategies previously reserved for private clients 👉 A community of parents who get it 👉 A monthly live mini coaching training with me 👉 Access to all my online courses These tools are designed to upskill YOU for mealtimes with better communication techniques so you're confident and start seeing progress, just like my clients. The wait list is closing soon so make sure you get on it for the early bird perks, comment "WAITLIST" and I'll DM you the link . . . . . . . #pickyeaters #pickyeater #neurodiversity #neurodivergentparenting #fussyeaters #pickyeating #neurodivergent #neurodivergentsupport #neurodivergentkids #foodrefusal #foodtherapy
