Watch my second episode with @coffee_and_theory Dr Will Zoppellni, you will want to soak up his knowledge, trust me 😍 If you signed my petition to make play based learning statutory in KS1 and believe in our ‘play is learning’ campaign then listen, educate yourself further and share this like there is no tomorrow. So we can hit the non believers, empower the play people and tip those over the edge who want to do this but are scared. This is a campaign for play based learning in KS1. 100,000 signatures in just over 3 months. What an achievement. What a thing we are doing for play, for children for all the experts in history who have shouted for this for centuries. By the way - we’re not stopping at 100,000 - keep going!!! Let me remind you - England is the only UK nation to not have play based learning protected, despite the research showing it’s best. We are the outlier. We are falling behind. He explored with his whole body without expecting a result. That’s the beauty of play it asks for nothing, yet builds the strongest connections you can imagine. At three, now, he isn’t just stacking, he’s planning, predicting, balancing, rebuilding, and telling stories through the pieces. The same toy, the same child, just a little more time, confidence, and wiring. Play isn’t extra. Play is everything. Instead of constantly introducing new categories, go deeper with what your kids already love. If your child is obsessed with magnetic tiles, cars, animals, or figurines, adding more pieces to those toys isn’t clutter — it’s a creativity booster. When kids already know how a toy works, giving them more of it lets them: ✨ Experiment and problem-solve ✨ Build bigger and more complex creations ✨ Focus longer and play more meaningfully Variety is great (and new toys can be fun) but some of the most powerful learning and imaginative play happens when you expand what they already enjoy. When I first started teaching, I thought music class had to look a certain way. More music reading. More explaining. More control. Ten years later, I understand an believe something different. Before children can read music, they need to feel it. Before they can follow symbols, they need to listen. Before they can play instruments together, they need to experience collaboration. This is why we move and why listening come first. Especially in a general music class setting, children learn through their bodies, their ears, and their relationships with each other. The milestone of following the recipes independently is one of my absolute favorites. There is so much more that goes into it, too! There’s an understanding of how text works and how your eyes move on a a page. There are so many executive functioning skills being practiced here. Lately, she has been all about cooking things herself. She is still helping me for most meals, but it’s also fun giving her these opportunities.
