Pico to Pico at sunrise is the most unreal thing I’ve done in Madeira. This island has my heart. I’ve visited twice and I’m still not over this trail. It’s super wild and dramatic! A few quick tips if you’re planning it: start in the dark with a headlamp. That way, you’ll catch sunrise above the clouds! Bring layers (it gets cold and windy), and check the weather right before you go since conditions flip fast. The hike is called Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo (PR1). It’s about 6 to 7 km one-way and the official time is 3.5 hrs, though most people spend longer taking photos and all. You’ll want to stop every few minutes haha. And if you know a trail that’s more spectacular than this one — drop it in the comments. I’m curious. In April, the trail is expected to fully reopen after a year and a half closure due to the damage caused by the August 2024 wildfires. We’re all waiting for that moment. But even now, its shorter — and arguably most beautiful — section is open and accessible to visitors. A small but important tip before you go: Check the webcam at Pico do Arieiro to avoid arriving in thick clouds. It makes all the difference. And here’s something most tourists don’t do — My favorite time to hike PR1 is at sunset, not sunrise. While the majority wakes up early, I prefer watching the light fade over the ridges. It feels quieter. More dramatic. However you can still go and walk until the staircase Comment HIKE and I’ll DM you my free guide to hiking in Madeira 🥾 Pico do Arieiro is definitely busier at sunrise (and it’s beautiful), and sunset is a lot calmer (but then you won’t be able to do the whole hike). An icon reopens! ⛰️👣👀 🇵🇹 Madeira’s legendary Stairway to Heaven on the PR1 Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo trail is FINALLY reopening next month after major safety upgrades. 🌄 🗺️ The full PR1 route is around 11km one way (Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo) and usually takes 4–6 hours depending on pace. Expect tunnels, narrow ridges, and endless staircases above the clouds. ☁️ 🤔 Not ready for the full 11km challenge? You can still experience the famous staircase by opting for the mini version of this hike. 📍 Simply start at Pico do Areeiro and hike for 30 minutes to reach the staircase, before turning back. 🥹 🚨 There is one big change this year that travellers should know - you now need to book a time slot to hike Madeira’s official trails. ⏰ 💶 Prices are around €4.50 for most trails, with the PR1 costing €10.50 independently or €7 with a certified guide 🌸 April slots for PR1 are expected to sell out quickly, so if this hike is on your bucket list, make sure you plan ahead! ✅ 📌 Don’t forget to save this reel so you remember when booking opens. 👀 Would you attempt the full ridge hike… or take the shorter route? Wait for it, and PINCH ME 😭 This is the day I cried actual tears of joy because the run up to this private sunset show was laced with disappointment and rain and gloom. And it was our last evening on the island. After hiking an hour around Pico Areiro (the third highest peak in Madeira), we turned back 10 minutes before sunset to start the walk back in the dark. “What’s the point of staying?” we asked ourselves. It’s all so gloomy and dark. There is no sign of the sun. But suddenly, we turned a corner and saw a golden red glow on one side of a mountain. “Where’s that light coming from?” we exclaimed as we ran to turn around a big rock face, and there it was, hidden behind! Words or videos will never be able to explain the cloud action, the spooky atmosphere, and the feeling of being enveloped in a mist of orange, pink, red, yellow and colours we cannot even name. And it was just the two of us. In this SURREAL landscape and light. Just the two of us. I have goosebumps as I try to explain it. The miracle happened. Within a few minutes of giving up, somehow, the sun fought with the thick fog cover and showed up. I believe it showed up just for us. That evening, we laughed and squealed and cried because we truly felt like God’s favourite children ♥️ PS: The previous day we did the sunrise hike from Pico Areiro to Pico Ruivo and went past this same spot crowded with hikers. The hike was a 5 hour long challenging one with steep inclines and tunnels and caves. To avoid the entire hike back to Pico Areiro, you can arrange for transfers at the summit with @doit.madeira , who include a pick up and drop off! The hike is self-guided and very well laid out, you won’t need a guide, but definitely do it with them for the transfer because you can’t drive up to Ruivo in your car. 🎥 Epic drone work by @radhika_nomllers , we almost lost it too 🙈 #Madeira #PR1 #sunsetlovers #picoareiro #portugal

The side of Pico do Arieiro you might not see… 🫣 You know those dreamy Madeira hiking videos with golden light, epic ridge views, and sunshine the entire time? Yeah… it’s not always that. Pico do Arieiro (aka Pico do Areeiro or PR1) is one of the most jaw-dropping hikes in Europe… when the weather cooperates. But if you hit it on the wrong day, it can quickly turn into hurricane-force winds, sideways rain, a complete whiteout. If you’re planning to hike PR1, here are a few things to know ⬇️ 🎟️ Reservations are required�Permits are currently €4.50 per person but will be increasing to €10.50 per person in April. The easiest way to see all Madeira trails and their statuses is on visitmadeira.com, which links directly to the SIMplifica portal to purchase permits. ⚠️ The cancellation policy is strict�According to the official website, you can only reschedule or cancel if the route is officially closed. Canceling for any other reason means losing the permit fee, which makes it difficult to adjust plans based on weather. 💡 Our tip: If this hike is high on your list, consider booking a backup day/time. 🌦️ Timing tip�Sunrise here is incredible, but it’s also riskier for weather. We found late afternoon had clearer conditions, and sunset views are just as magical. 🚗 Parking tips�Parking at the Pico do Arieiro summit lot costs about €4/hour (max €20) and fills up quickly, especially at sunrise. If that lot is full, there’s another parking area about 1 km (0.6 mi) down the road with a 10–15 minute walk uphill to the trailhead. ⚠️ Trail status�The full PR1 route is currently closed due to wildfire damage from 2024. Only the first ~0.75 miles (1.2 km) from Pico do Arieiro is open right now. The full 6.8 mile (11 km) one-way trail / 13.6 mile (22 km) round trip is expected to reopen on April 27, 2026, at which time the permit fee will increase to €10.50 per person. Madeira hiking rule: the mountain decides what kind of day you’re going to have. Save this if PR1 is on your Madeira bucket list 🇵🇹
