Hence, the piping design engineer must consider the important points while designing the pump piping layout. The design of a suction and discharge line should be delivered keeping in mind the operability, maintainability, flexibility, and support requirements of the piping system. 🛑✍🏽 Basic Rules of Pump Piping Design: 1. Keep Suction Piping as Short as Possible. 2. Pipe Diameter on Suction Side Should be Equal or One Size Larger Than Pump Inlet. 3. Use Eccentric Reducers on the Suction Side. 4. Eliminate Elbows Mounted on or Close to the Inlet Nozzle of the Pump. 5. Eliminate Potential for Air Entrapment in the Suction Piping. 6. Ensure the Piping Arrangement Does Not Cause Strain on the Pump Casing. 🔷 Note: An expansion joint is installed in piping systems for a couple of reasons. They can be used to absorb vibrations and shock and to relieve anchor stress, reduce noise and compensate for misalignment. Certain expansion joints are also designed for thermal expansion in hot applications.
