👇 My top 6 tips for landing a literary agent! 1. I only queried my book once it was 100% polished and complete and had gone through multiple drafts (+ feedback from critique partners and my book coach) 2. I researched agents and their stats extensively through MSWL and QueryTracker and *personalized* all of my query letters 3. I wrote about 90 versions of my query letter, making sure every single word packed a punch 4. Once I got a positive signal from my first few queries, I queried a *ton* of agents at once 5. I made sure to query newer / junior agents in addition to querying my ‘dream’ agents 6. I followed up with all agents after I had my first offer; within 2 weeks I had 8 calls with agents who were trying to convince *me* to work with *them*! (Truly such a surreal experience, after years of never feeling like my writing would be good enough.) Comment QUERYLETTER if you want my free guide, a copy of the query letter I sent to agents, + my query letter template! You’ve got this! 📚 💫

The breakdown⬇️ **This is NOT me giving advice! Every author’s budget and set of priorities is different. This is nothing more than my experience — bc this is the type of video I wish I would’ve seen before I published my book** **With this series, I pursued self-publishing from the beginning. If you’re traditionally publishing, you shouldn’t be paying a dime<3** 📘WRITING SOFTWARE: I use Word because it also doubles as my formatting software for paperbacks & hardcovers. The baseline price is $109 but look out for sales!! I was able to get lifetime access for just $30 📘EDITORS: I personally choose to pay for line/copy edits and proofreading (done by two completely different people, to get more sets of eyes on the manuscript). If I didn’t have such an amazingly talented beta reading team, I would also consider paying for developmental edits. 📘COVER DESIGN: This price can range from around $50 to literal thousands. Look around on IG, on the web, and don’t be hasty. The cover is so important! 📘MAP: *not necessary!* I personally always knew I wanted a map at the front of my book. If this isn’t your cup of tea, no worries. It’s not a necessity :) 📘ISBNs: This also isn’t completely necessary — while your book will need an ISBN, most companies (Amazön KDP, Ingram, etc) will provide you a free ISBN. But to have the number match across publishing platforms, you’ll have to purchase your own from Bowker 📘ATTICUS: This is how I format my ebooks. There are other platforms out there, but I like this one! (forgot to include) 📘COPYRIGHT: In the US, your work is copyrighted from the second you write it. However… max protection is good. This costs $65ish 💸 I hope this helps if you’re like my past self and want a sneak peek into publishing costs! I could’ve done this cheaper, and I could’ve done it more expensive. Don’t take as anything more than one person’s experience. Thanks for reading :) • • • #authorsofinstagram #selfpublishedauthor #indieauthorsunited #writerscommunity #fantasybooks #debutnovel #youngadultbook #amreadingfantasy

Your life could be so much easier.. Listen, I get it. Scrivener is confusing. It’s not free. But the long term advantages of using it are by FAR worth it. Think about how much easier it is to use a computer than to write your novel by hand. The jump from Google docs to scrivener is similar. Once you make it you’re like ohhh — I get it now. A novel is full of so many complex moving pieces — characters and plot lines and subplots and themes and on and on. Your brain needs space to hold all of this! So instead of just throwing all of this stuff into one bag, organize it neatly so that you can actually keep track of it all. Comment SCRIVENERGUIDE if you want my free tutorial and cheat sheet. I’ll show you how to save your work to the cloud, use all of the best features, and compile your manuscript.

READ THIS FOR WHY👇🏼 But first, SAVE this reel to reference when you’re querying! ✋🏼 Look, we ALL know traditional publishing is competitive! Literary agents reject manuscripts for LOTS of reasons… But sometimes, rejections have NOTHING to do with your ability as a writer. 🫢 Here’s THREE other reasons why your novel got rejected:👇🏼 1. You pitched your novel as a series. 📔 Most agents want to see if they can sell ONE of your books before committing to 2, 3, or 14 more. 😅 This doesn’t mean your book won’t ever become a series! ✋🏼 Instead: Pitch your novel as a standalone with series potential! 👏🏼 2. Your novel’s genre didn’t fit. 📔 Most agents specialize in particular genres, so even if they like your book, they won’t represent it if it doesn’t fit with their agency’s track record. 😬 Don’t submit to random agents!👇🏼 Use websites like QueryTracker and Manuscript Wishlist to learn EXACTLY what genres your potential literary agents represent! ✍🏼 3. You submitted outside the query “window.” 📔 Most literary agents only review manuscripts during certain months of the year. Their query “season” dates are on their website. If you submit to an agent OUTSIDE of this window, your manuscript will likely be automatically discarded, unread. 👎🏼 Don’t make this mistake! Put your best foot forward and adhere to ALL guidelines outlined on the agency’s website. 🫶🏼 Remember, rejection does NOT determine your ability as a writer. Every writer, no matter how successful, encounters rejection—you’ve got this! 🤍 Want more advice?👇🏼 COMMENT “WRITERSCLUB” to get a once-weekly email from me with more writing advice and resources! 📔 FOLLOW for daily writing tips, motivation, and good vibes! 🤍 #amquerying #querying #literaryagents #literaryagentsofinstagram #newwriters #writingadvice #publishingtips #writersofinstagram #writergirl #writerscommunity #writingtips #queryinglitagents #getpublished

Here’s what you need to know👇🏼 I interned at a top Chicago literary agency for over a year. As a writer, I learned the ins and outs of the publishing world—and what agents are looking for from debut authors! ✍🏼 If you’re ready to traditionally publish your novel, the first step is pitching your manuscript to an agent, usually through email. Want to make a good impression? 🤔 HERE are 3 things I learned:👇🏼 1. For debut authors, word count caps are pretty strict. 📔 Even if every word is great, an agent will likely NOT accept your novel if it’s over 100k (even for genres like fantasy!) ✍🏼 This is because more words cost more money to print, and debut authors don’t have a track record of sales yet. Literary agents want to see if your book sells before letting you have free range with word count. 😅 2. Literary agents get THOUSANDS of queries. Don’t take rejections personally. 📔 As an intern, I sorted THOUSANDS of emails from writers. From these, we requested a few hundred manuscripts. And from those, we signed ONE author in the entirety of my time there. 😬 Rejections don’t always mean the writing was bad. We often rejected manuscripts if the genre didn’t fit with our style, or we already had too much on our plate. So, DON’T take rejection personally (it’s hard, I know).✍🏼 3. Your pitch matters. 📔 Your pitch is the first thing agents see. 👀 Look up a “query letter format.” You’ll quickly see that there’s a “formula” to queries—don’t deviate from this! Your manuscript is where your creativity will shine. Keep your query letter clear, concise, and punchy.👏🏼 And REMEMBER: being published is NOT necessary to be a good writer. ✍🏼 I’m happy to answer questions in the comments about my experience to help you guys out. 🫶🏼 COMMENT: Do you have publishing dreams? 📔 FOLLOW for more writing advice, motivation, and good vibes! 🤍 #literaryagent #literaryagents #amquerying #writergram #writersofinsta #writesofnovember #writingadvice #publishingadvice #newwritersclub #writersofig #writergirl

and i mean almost every single one. not the writing. not the concept. not even the comps, which writers agonize over more than anything else and matter significantly less than they’ve been led to believe. it’s that the query describes what happens in the book instead of telling me what the book is. and those are not the same thing, and nobody explains the difference until a writer has already collected enough rejections to wallpaper a room. i see it from debut writers and i see it from writers who’ve been querying for years. i see it from writers with MFAs and writers who’ve never taken a class. it cuts across every genre and every experience level because it’s not a skill gap — it’s a framing problem. and framing problems are invisible when you’re too close to your own work, which every writer is, because they had to be to write the book in the first place. the closeness that makes you a good writer is the exact thing that makes the query hard. you’ve been inside this book for years. you know every layer of it. and then someone asks you to describe it in 250 words to a stranger who has 87 other emails to read today, and you do what any reasonable person would do — you describe what you know. which is everything that happens. but i don’t need everything that happens. i need to know what kind of reader this book is going to feel like oxygen to. and those are wildly different documents. the fixable part is real though. that’s the thing. this one is actually fixable. follow @jessica__berg because i’m the literary agent who is telling you how to make your query better and will tell you what’s actually in the way.

Writing advice: Writing tips for new writers 👉 Save for later! . Read intentionally. When you read a paragraph of a novel that makes you tense or delighted or fearful, question why. Think about the word choice, the sentence structure, the pacing, and everything that came in the scene before it. See how you can use these techniques in your own writing. . Practice writing short stories sometimes, even if your end goal is to write a novel. As Ray Bradbury said: “Write a short story every week. It’s not possible to write 52 bad short stories in a row.” . Write primarily for yourself, especially if writing is a hobby. There’s always going to be someone who hates something. You can’t please everyone! Writers benefit from a thick skin. If you see a tweet about how your favourite trope is cliche or weird, you don’t need to cut it out of your book. There’s a market for everything, and if you write something you genuinely love, it’ll find its audience. . Try finding a writing community. There’s a link to a free writing club discord in my bio under “free resources”. Sometimes a second opinion helps a lot! . You can break as many “rules” as you like. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to writing. If a piece of advice doesn’t suit you, there’s no need to follow it. Your writing is uniquely yours, and that means you have the freedom to break as many “rules” as you want. . 👉  Save for later 💬  Tell us your favourite writing tips in the comments 🔍  Get resources and freebies in the link in my bio .
