Propagating aloe vera is straightforward—and very satisfying! The most reliable method is using offsets (“pups”) that grow at the base of the parent plant.
How to separate and plant
1. Remove the parent plant from the pot
Gently loosen soil to expose the base.
2. Locate the connection
Offsets are attached to the mother plant by a rhizome.
3. Separate cleanly
Wiggle apart by hand; if needed, use a knife to cut the connecting piece.
4. Let cuts dry
Air-dry the pup 24–72 hours so the cut end calluses (prevents rot).
5. Pot the offset
• Use a small pot with drainage holes
• Fill with cactus/succulent mix (or potting soil + some horticultural grit
6. Wait to water
Don’t water for 3–5 days after planting; then water lightly.
Growing aloe at home (quick tips)
• Bright, indirect sunlight
• Well-draining cactus/succulent soil
• Water deeply but infrequently (let soil dry between watering)
• Pot with drainage hole; avoid standing water
• Propagates easily from offsets
