They called it the Condor Cluster. At the time, it was one of the fastest supercomputers on the planet. The PS3’s Cell processor was designed for insane parallel processing — way beyond what a normal PC could handle. Sony built it for gaming but accidentally created the perfect chip for military-grade number crunching. 500 trillion operations per second. Radar imaging. Pattern recognition. Satellite data processing. Real military workloads on a gaming console. Two miles of cable to connect them all. One catch: if Sony pushed an auto-update, it would brick the entire military supercomputer. GPS came from the military. The internet came from the military. This supercomputer was known as the “Condor Cluster.” The reason behind using PS3 consoles was primarily cost efficiency. The PS3’s Cell processor was powerful for its time, and building a supercomputer using these gaming consoles was significantly cheaper than using traditional supercomputing components.
