Okay… hear me out. 🫣 The hamburger paragraph isn’t wrong… It’s just not enough. It gives kids a structure—but it also quietly teaches them that every paragraph should look the same. And that’s where things fall apart. Because in real writing: ✨ Paragraphs look different in every genre ✨ They can be short, long, or somewhere in between ✨ They’re based on purpose—not a formula So instead of teaching “5 sentences every time,” we can teach students to think like writers. That’s when things start to click. 💡 💬 Comment, “PARAGRAPH” and I’ll send you the blog post where I break this down step-by-step. 💛

🙊Most kids don’t actually hate writing. What they hate is… the pressure. 😨 When students feel rushed, graded, unsupported, unsure of how to start or what to do 😖😰writing shuts down… and it shuts down fast! You might attribute the lack of writing growth to: ✔️My students just haaaaattteeee writing. ✔️My students are struggling with sooooo many writing skills. ❌ But that’s not what’s causing it. The PRESSURE around writing is most likely the big culprit. 💡Try lowering the pressure level and that will often result in more risk-taking, better idea generation, and stronger writing output from your students! Where do you notice writing pressure showing up most in your classroom? Let’s talk.👇🏽 Save, share, and follow @theliteracydive for more quick literacy tips! #teachingwriting #writingtips #elateacher writing teachers | writing ideas | literacy tips

I remember sitting through lessons as a new teacher watching Kindergarteners being asked to write persuasive pieces… and thinking: They don’t even know what a complete sentence is yet. It was frustrating for the teacher and the students. Kids weren’t “not getting it” because they lacked ideas… they lacked the tools. They walked away with a hollow understanding of writing that didn’t connect to anything they knew about reading or spelling. ✏️ If we’re jumping into writing without explicitly teaching what makes a sentence… we’re missing HUGE opportunities to build strong writers. Because the truth is: Children’s great ideas are unusable if they don’t have the tools to put them together coherently. We spend SO much time on writing types—narrative, opinion, persuasive… …but skip over the very thing that makes any of it possible: ➡️ How to build a sentence ➡️ Grammar & conventions ➡️ How to revise and edit It’s putting the cart before the horse. 🐴 This is exactly why I love using Julia & the Healthy Sentence 💬✨ Instead of jumping into big writing tasks, it helps students first understand: 🧠 What a complete sentence actually is 🔗 How words work together to make meaning ✏️ How to check and fix their own writing In 1st grade, as soon as students can blend and encode CVC words, we start introducing: 🛠️ Simple sentence structure ✏️ Editing marks 👀 Self-monitoring habits So students aren’t just writing. They’re: ✔️ Evaluating their work ✔️ Strengthening sentence clarity ✔️ Building confidence When writing instruction gets too big and broad too fast, students are bound to be left behind. Writing isn’t something kids just “pick up.” It must be intentionally scaffolded, and that goes far beyond idea generation. Strong writing starts with a healthy sentence. 💪 Comment “Sentence,” and I’ll send you links to my sentence book, free editing checklist, and spelling scope & sequence with dictation! #StructuredLiteracy #ScienceOfReading #WritingInstruction #HealthySentence #FirstGradeTeachers KindergartenTeachers EarlyWriting ExplicitInstruction GrammarMatters TeachWriting PhonicsToWriting LiteracyInstruction TeacherLife

You can give them quiet. You can give them worksheets. You can give them the writing prompt. But if your students haven’t had a chance to say the ideas first, they won’t be ready to write them. That’s why I don’t start with silence. I start with language. When students can: 🖼️ see it 🗣️ talk about it 🔁 rehearse it ✨ use the words in a sentence writing starts to move. Because if they can’t say it, they can’t write it. Always. There’s ONE sentence frame I use all the time because: ✨ it gives students words right away ✨ it turns a picture into a sentence ✨ it works for beginners and stronger writers ✨ it makes writing feel doable ✨ it bridges talking → writing Once students rehearse the language out loud, the writing comes so much easier. You’re not pulling sentences out of them. They already have something to say. Comment TALK and I’ll send you the sentence frame that helps students move from talking → writing. Follow @gladlyteaching for talk-first routines that turn language into writing. #languagelearners #teacherlife #iteachwriting #languagelearners

Yes…you read that right. Two years in a row. I was a brand-new teacher. Scared to death. I knew I had done nothing wrong… but that didn’t make it any less terrifying. I came up with a way of teaching writing that is simple. And I kept going. I went on to become a writing coach and writing specialist, working with 25+ schools and hundreds of teachers across my district. And in 2011, I started Top Score Writing… to share the exact strategies that worked with teachers around the world. Because teachers deserve better. You deserve curriculum that actually makes sense. You deserve curriculum that is simple and structured. You deserve a real writing curriculum, not just an ELA program that hopes writing happens. I used to think my students just needed to try harder with writing. It’s something many of us have thought at some point. We see students with ideas, but when it’s time to write, they hesitate, avoid, or shut down. What’s actually happening is much more complex. Students are being asked to plan their ideas, organize their thinking, and write all at once without ever being explicitly taught how to break those steps apart. That’s a heavy cognitive load, and for many students, it leads to frustration and avoidance. When writing instruction becomes structured and step-by-step, something shifts. Students know how to start, build their ideas, and keep going. The same students who struggled begin to engage and make progress. Writing isn’t about trying harder. It’s about being taught clearly. I used to DREAD teaching writing. For years, I didn’t know what the problem was… but I later learned, it was my system. I tried every graphic organizer out there— even made my own. If it didn’t work for me, it definitely wasn’t working for them. Then I went back to what I knew: mind mapping. I adapted it for upper elementary and “brain bubbles” were born. Little by little, I started using them for everything— not just planning, but ALL writing. Then came quick writes. We start at 5 minutes and build stamina all year long. The prompts are fun, the structure is simple, and the engagement is REAL. Now? My students have ideas, stamina, AND structure. And I actually LOVE teaching writing. One thing I never shy away from in the classroom is structure. Kids can’t build confidence in their writing without a strong foundation first. When students understand how a paragraph works, everything changes. They start writing more, sharing more, and believing they can actually do it. If you want a simple lesson that teaches students a paragraph structure they can use again and again, send us a DM and we’ll send the link. Let’s get kids writing! #TeachingWriting #TeacherLife #LiteracyMatters #TeacherResources #ElementaryTeachers

Writing well-organized paragraphs can be deliciously fun! Using the burger writing analogy, students build their paragraphs just like stacking a burger: the topic sentence is the top bun, juicy details are the fillings, and the conclusion is the bottom bun. It’s a visual, memorable way to help writers of all levels structure their ideas and own their writing one bite at a time. Comment YUMMY to grab this resource and help your writers stack the perfect paragraph! #writingpractice #ela #teachers #writing

Can't get your child to write? Make it relateable! Here you can see how we have used sequencing words such as 'At first', 'then' and 'finally' in how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This can then be transferred to any topic of your child's choice such as a recent holiday, what they had for dinner last night, or even a story about their favourite character! Try it today and see!
