Full-wave rectifiers are commonly used in power supplies to convert AC to DC, providing the steady DC voltage needed for electronic devices. There are two main types of full-wave rectifiers: Center-Tapped Full-Wave Rectifier and Bridge Rectifier. A Bridge Rectifier uses four diodes in a bridge configuration to convert both the positive and negative halves of the AC input into DC. ▶️ During the positive half-cycle of the AC waveform, diodes D1 and D2 are forward-biased, allowing current to flow through the load in the direction indicated. Diodes D3 and D4 are reverse-biased during this half-cycle and do not conduct. ▶️ During the negative half-cycle of the AC waveform, diodes D3 and D4 become forward-biased, allowing current to flow through the load in the same direction as during the positive half-cycle. Diodes D1 and D2 are reverse-biased in this cycle, preventing current from flowing through them. This consistent direction of current through the load results in a continuous DC output, as seen in the rectified waveform. In practical applications, a smoothing capacitor is often added to the output of the rectifier to smooth out the ripples in the DC output, providing a more steady and smooth DC voltage. Let's differentiate them considering the use of the same output capacitors and the same load: When both use the same output capacitors and the same load: - The capacitor in a full wave rectifier will be more effective in smoothing the ripple, as the frequency of the voltage pulses is double that in the half wave rectifier. - In both cases, the capacitor's capacity determines how much ripple is smoothed. A larger capacitor results in less ripple. - The load will receive a more constant and less pulsating voltage in the full wave rectifier due to the lower ripple and higher pulse frequency. A bridge rectifier is a circuit responsible for converting alternating current (AC), which constantly changes direction, into direct current (DC) that flows in one direction, which is what most electronic devices need to operate. How does it work? (Working principle) The operation is based on the property of a diode, which allows current to pass in only one direction and prevents it in the opposite direction. The bridge operates through two cycles: 1. Positive half of the wave: • When the current comes in a certain direction, a pair of opposite diodes (e.g., the first and third diodes) open the path for the current to pass through the load (device) from positive to negative. • Meanwhile. the other nair of diodes Negative half of the wave: • When the alternating current reverses direction, the first pair of diodes closes, while the second pair (the second and fourth diodes) opens the path. • The secret here is that the diodes are arranged so that the current passes through the device in the same direction as it did in the first half. Components of the device in the image: • Input (AC): There are two terminals through which the alternating current enters (often symbolized by the ~ sign). • Output (DC): There are two terminals that output the direct current (positive + and negative -).
