O TON 618 é um quasar hiperluminoso associado a um buraco negro supermassivo extremo, localizado no regime de alto desvio para o vermelho (redshift ≈ 2,2), correspondente a uma época cósmica em que o Universo tinha apenas alguns bilhões de anos. Espectros obtidos por observação óptica e ultravioleta revelam linhas largas de emissão provenientes da *Broad Line Region (BLR), indicando velocidades orbitais da ordem de vários milhares de km/s e sugerindo um potencial gravitacional extremamente profundo. A massa do buraco negro central é estimada por técnicas de virial mass estimation aplicadas às linhas de emissão, em conjunto com calibrações de luminosidade do contínuo em cerca de ~10¹¹ massas solares, colocando o TON 618 entre os maiores buracos negros já inferidos por métodos observacionais. A alta luminosidade bolométrica do quasar é interpretada como resultado de um disco de acreção termicamente dominado, cuja emissão é bem descrita por modelos de disco fino tipo Shakura–Sunyaev operando próximo à fração significativa do limite de Eddington. A conversão eficiente de energia potencial gravitacional em radiação eletromagnética implica uma taxa de acreção massiva sustentada por um reservatório gasoso abundante no ambiente proto-galáctico de alto redshift. Observações radio-ópticas sugerem ainda a presença de estruturas de jets relativísticos colimados, indiciando um mecanismo de extração de energia associado ao acoplamento entre o campo magnético e a rotação do buraco negro (mecanismo Blandford–Znajek). Do ponto de vista cosmológico, o TON 618 constitui um laboratório para o estudo de regimes extremos de crescimento de buracos negros e coevolução com galáxias hospedeiras em épocas precoces do Universo.
