Every time light enters a new medium, it changes direction — this is called refraction. How much it bends depends on the refractive indices of the two media involved. In this experiment, light coming from the coloured parts of the flower is refracted twice: first when it passes from the plastic bag into the water, and again when it travels from the water back into the air. As a result, the refracted light no longer reaches our eyes when we look from above the beaker, so the colours appear to disappear. Why doesn’t the black outline vanish as well? The black outline is drawn on the outside of the bag and absorbs almost all incident light, reflecting very little. Since there is almost no reflected light to be redirected by refraction, the black outline remains visible. #science #stem #stemeducationforkids #physics #physicsstudent

When immersed in vegetable oil, the glass and oil effectively "match," making the glass less visible because light doesn’t change direction as it passes through. Pencil Disappearing experiment. When you put a pencil in an empty glass, you see it clearly. But after pouring water the pencil looks bent, shifted or sometimes partly invisible. In some angles, parts of it seem to “disappear.” What’s Really Happening (Refraction) This happens because of refraction of light. Light travels at different speeds in air, water and glass. When light moves from air into water, it changes direction (bends). Your eyes trace light in straight lines , so when the light bends your brain thinks the pencil is in a different position. Why It Looks Invisible Sometimes At certain angles, Light rays from part of the pencil don’t reach your eyes properly. Some light reflects off the surface of water.also the bent image overlaps background light.
